Description Mark One Travel Machine: Kaled-Thal War era

After centuries of nuclear and chemical war, the Kaled race had begun to suffer from increasingly advanced mutation. The Mk 1 Travel Machine was designed as a means of supporting and protecting the resulting creatures, but its potential as a weapon capable of finally ending the war was quickly realised...

---

Based on the very early design concepts for the Daleks, this design incorporates various other elements to fit it in with the finalised design - namely the bands and hemis. The claw is copied more or less directly from the Movie Daleks.

Doctor Who belongs to the BBC.

It's a real joy to see this rendition. All your Daleks are fantastic. This is extra special to me. I hope one day, Character make a 5 inch one to go with their toy range.Β

In the end of "I,Davros - Guilt" Davros puts a thal in a MK1 travel machine which apparently already has a weapon whereas your MK1 travel machine doesn't look as if it has one. Is there a reason for this? Β

I don't recall mention of a weapon . . . must listen to it again more closely, clearly! The main reason however is that the earliest concept art for the Daleks does not include a gunstick and I wanted to follow that.

It's on Track 14 of I, Davros - Guilt. Davros uses the word "weapon" and not gun so I suppose the claw could be a weapon.

Ah! Well, I'm sure they meant gunstick. But never mind. As I've said before, I wanted to homage the Dalek concept art more than anything else.

So, when they say Mark 1 do they mean the Dead Planet Daleks? (Isolation era Drones)

Usually what 'Mark 1 Dalek' means is the first props used, so that's the Dead Planet ones. The Invasion of Earth ones are the Mark 2s, and the Chase are the Mark 3s. These are usually referred to as Shawcraft Mk 1, Shawcraft Mk 2, and Shawcraft Mk 3 Daleks after the company who build them. Thereafter, they were modified or built by other people, so the naming convention tapers off.

Interesting, I didn't know aboutΒ Shawcraft. Thanks for responding.

Hah, this looks like the "After" shot on those weight-loss ads you see.

"DALEKS! Do your casings make you look fat? Want to shed a few of those "extra bumps"?"

Maybe stick a pair of the Arcade Berserker's caterpillar treads onto it to compensate? A lower-technology mechanism for locomotion than the standard dalek gliding and hovering. Shorten the cylindrical body casing to compensate and keep the dalek's total height the same. Only two rows of circular bumps, not four.

Also, does the neck have the capability to vertically extend itself as well as rotating like in this really old piece of concept art ?

Well, it is the prototype. I'm seeing that in Davros' notes now: "Handles poorly on corners, research wider fender"

I'm not sure what else I can add to what I've previously stated about this design, but it's nice to finally see the elevations. The 1950s Soviet space era design aesthetic really does fit wonderfully, and the design of the machine itself suggests it may have been derived from some sort of plausibly bulky and articulated radiation armour. Very nice work.
