Sakurai said he want next game to not have many clones, to be more balanced and strategic.The main difference is that 'less is more' by having less characters and more outfits it's possible to have more with less and still be balanced.

Where's Luigi? Luigi is a clone of Mario's moves. Mario has an outfit that makes him look like Luigi.
Dixie Kong over Diddy Kong? Diddy's been kidnapped!
No Toad or Toadette. Nobody would use them.
What about Rosalina or Daisy? Peach outfits.
Capt. Syrup? She's a manipulator and doesn't like fighting.
Where's Toon Link? Outfit for Link.
Wha? Skyward Sword Zelda isn't a fighter. *She'll have some modified magic attacks.*

A gritty reboot of the Ice Climbers would be nice, survival horror.
Koopalings game just seem to be bosses and not much developed.

How about if the Koopalings game we're similar to Skylanders, and it involves Mario kidnapping Bowser, and Bowser Jr. and the Koopalings rescuing him. Kind of a funny scene in my head where Little Mac tries to take on Ralph, and Ralph sends him flying with one hit.
Little Mac then gets back up and wants another round. Ralph punches Mac dodges and sends Ralph flying.

they just had to be on a Nintendo console / handheld at some point.

for many of those it holds true yes. but you also have to know that nintendo needs to be able to license the character to use it. They also tend to set limits on characters per franchise. All of the marvel characters are out as they are not primarily video game characters. same goes for wreak it ralph. and as much as it saddens me it is unlikely we will see any ff characters. space pirate is a generic character. other than that i dont really see too many problems. i chose to remain hopeful about megaman characters being in game however unlikely that is. i like that you included little mac in there. nice touch.

Space Pirate is generic, but has potential to be awesome and to be a foil to Samus without having to be a deceased hunter or Dark Samus or Ridley. Think Different.
WiR is a movie about Video Games and he has his own video game and he was in Sega Super All Star Racing.
Sakurai I think said he wouldn't have mind Mega Man in but he didn't want to make the first move, and Capcom wanted him in Brawl but they didn't want to make the first move either. He's the #1 asked for player in all of the new rosters. he's a shoe in for sure.
