Aqtuquaq Forest seemed less welcoming than it had on previous visits. The setting sun cast deep red rays through the pine choked land. There wasn’t a sound except for the occasional thump of snow falling from tired branches and a large, white dire’s nervous footsteps.
This was the first time Denali had been sent on a hunt without his sister, Amaruq. His handler, Kodiak, had sold her off not long ago after finding he didn’t have enough money to keep them all well fed. The dire had hoped it would be February sold rather than his sister – or perhaps even the small, normal built toko that was kept around known as Leap Year. Her absence had gone largely unnoticed by the rest of the pack but Denali was keenly tuned into it. Before, they’d done nearly everything exclusively together – fishing, hunting, and exploring. It wasn’t until after she was gone that Denali and his handler became aware of the lacking relationship between the large white dire and the others. As a result, it became nearly impossible to get Denali to work with anyone else. The only solution was to send Denali off without a partner.
Now Denali wandered an eerie forest on his first solo hunt – consequently also just as he needed to prove his dominance. His red eyes scanned the forest for any sign of life or, rather, anything he could hunt to prove his dominance.
A sudden disgruntled roar followed by the thump of snow being knocked free drew Denali’s attention. Between the thick tree trunks and pine, he could see the form of a bear flitting in and out of view as it tried to satisfy an itch. The albino dire sunk low to the ground, carefully and quietly approaching the prey. It was odd to see a bear out in the open – it seemed late in the season for a bear to still be up and moving but it would do.
He was able to come within fifteen feet before the bear seemed to sense his presence. Denali sunk lower to the ground, allowing his fur to blend in with the snow. Just as the bear seemed to lose interest in him, another closer, louder roar echoed to his right. Denali’s head shot up, scrambling to his paws when a sharp pain shot through his side. He cried out – a mix of a whine and a deep snarl – as a new bear latched onto his side and sank his teeth deep in his flesh.
Denali latched onto the back of the bear’s neck, biting as hard as he could to get the animal to let go. It seemed to work but the damage was done. Blood splattered across the snow as a gaping wound was revealed once the bear had released him. It roared again, standing its ground and preparing to bite him again.
Pain throbbed throughout Denali’s side as he cast a glance back toward the other bear but found it gone. Gritting his teeth, he allowed himself to focus on his new prey. No matter the damage done to the albino dire and no matter the pain that coursed through him, he was going to bring this bear’s pelt back home with him.
(gasp, actual canon story of one of my Tokos. O and that's 530 words)
