you know what would make that look even more amazing, if you lightened the corner where the calf is in shadow (or at least lighten the shadow of the mum on the bub)

You are absolutely right. Actually I had great doubts about submitting this shot because of the difficult distribution of the light and dark parts due to the contra-light, but then liked the scene too much.
It would have been better, if I had been able to lighten parts of it, but I must admit that my technical ability of using Photoshop are too restricted for that.

my advice - learn it
its a good tool for photographers, and photomamipulators alike. I know what you mean about the scene it is very quaint

I can reassure you. There was a fence here this time.
Yes, I held the camera very low, without the need to look through the viewfinder. With some training you can do it, using the automatic functions of the camera. And you do get very nice effects like this when you hold the camera just 10 cm or so above the ground.
