Description
Ever counted just how many tails Toothless has gone through? Ever even given it a second thought? Well, inspired by one comment on youtube who noticed the difference between the tails, and dared to ask the question of why they were so different.. I decided to go back and show you guys all the Toothless tails that I could find. Starting with Toothless' injured tail, without any tail fin added. Then, his first tail fin.. Then the one in the episode from Riders of Berk "Defiant One" where he gets a green tail after his old one is burned off. Next up is the infamous auto tail from "Gift of the Night Fury" who could forget the famed tail that gave Toothless flight on his own! Second to last is the tail at the end of the film, positioned there to show the difference between this one and the next one. Lastly..-drumroll-
The HTTYD 2 Teaser Trailer tail! Which inspired this whole picture. And the person on youtube is right! The tail at the end of the first film and the one in the sequel have different designs, not only is the skull helmet like viking symbol designed differently, it is upside down in comparison to the old one!
Quite obviously this is not the same tail as seen at the end of the first film, since this one gives the ability to let Toothless fly (err.. glide!) through the skies! Also.. take into account that his old tail might have been..
-Burned off
-Bit off
-Torn up in battle
-Worn out
-Out-grown
-Or just not as cool as this new one!
So there you have it! All of Toothless tails thus far.
(Defenders of Berk tails that may be presented in the future not included)
Enjoy!

Not sure if anyone else has noticed this, but Toothless's newest tail is also operated by Hiccup's right foot, as opposed to his prosthetic left (which has been altered at least once as well).

Throughout the Dragons series, Hiccup has remade Toothless' tailing several times. The style just doesn't change enough noticeably.

You are right. Several times he does remake the tail. This is just for fun, inspired by a comment on youtube when someone noticed that the tails look different from the first movie and the 2nd.

Yeah.
Also, some of the Comic-Con exclusive Toothless toys had different tail-fins not seen in the series. Yellow with a black scull and crossbones, I believe.

PS: By design I didn't mean anything except the skull placment and art on the tail. Probably the only other difference is this one is bigger, since Toothless grew.

The last tail is the best. I never noticed that the one at the end of the movie was different than the sequel!

I think that this new tail must have like some sort of auto pilot setting, Once Hiccup and Toothless have achieved a desired altitude he engages the tail rudder in a fixed position, leaving Toothless able to glide but not maneuver.

Omg thats so cool! Please share images of it as you go and when its done! I can't wait to see what it would look like! Oh and in case you are wondering, the tail in Defiant one is a pale green color. That was the best qaulity I could find at the time. Hard to find good pics of his tails. XD Most of these were screen shots off of part of the clips online; while I was making this I was surprised no one else had ever taken time to look through all the different tails.
Anywho, glad Β this can be of help to you. This was something I did just for fun, so I am VERY happy that it can be of use to you. Good luck with the hoodie dear! I'm sure it'll be the talk of your town.
