Description I have been in a bit of a Harry Potter kick since being sick. I couldn't help but celebrate my recovery by drawing my interpretation of the death snake herself (I even gave her a skull head). She is my favorite Harry Potter monster of all time... merely because she scares the living daylights out of me.

You don't know where she is... you don't know where she will show up. Just turn that one corner and bam. Before you have time to blink, you are dead. Not because you were physically attacked. But because you looked.

Heh-heh. XD XD Nice pic!! It's good to see the Basilisk of the Chamber of Secrets get some fanart love, I rather like that monster as well and I haven't seen it get much fanart or fanfiction when looking in the past!!
I love the large, dark-green body against the darker-green background, the way it winds around the inside of the picture frame and past the borders - it looks like the Basilisk's body is representative of water going down a drain. Although the Basilisk's body looks basic without scales, spikes, scars or some other features.
I wouldn't have guessed this was the 'Harry Potter' Basilisk because of the skull-head; it makes the creature look very demonic and non-zoological. I love looking at the details of the saliva on its jaws and tongue, but the slobber-amount I personally feel makes the Basilisk look unintelligent. I love the bright-yellow eye, it's quite hypnotic to stare into after a while, with the curvy-diamond shape and ultra-pale colour.
I LOVE that you included the Basilisk's dialogue on the background - saying 'Must rip' or 'Will tear' would be disturbing enough, but I always found it very disturbing to think any predator would say 'Let me rip you', 'Let me kill you' when stalking its prey.       Having that glimpse of the Basilisk's behaviour is pretty terrifying, and I'm not sure I want to know what the fuck goes on inside its head beyond its mutterings in its own animal-language!!     I love that the dialogue is written in blood, as a reference to the 'Chamber of Secrets' blood-words on the wall and because it hints it's the blood of the referred-to victims.
Not a bad piece. Love the Basilisk from 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets' getting some fanart-love, though the design seems a bit basic and too non-zoological for the creature, to me personally. Maybe I'm just used to the Basilisk being a giant zoological snake and not something less natural-looking. I wouldn't mind seeing more 'Harry Potter' fanart or franchise-you-love-kick fanart in the future.

I kinda prefer this design over the one we got in the book and the movie. In the book, the Serpent of Slytherin just looked like a big friggin' snake while in the book, she just looked like a snake with a dragon's head. Here, while the skull-face is a bit on the nose, it is also fitting since it reflects the nature of all basilisks; they are harbingers of death and it only takes one look in the eye to kill. Which makes me wonder, why do basilisks in the Harry Potter universe even need fangs at all when they can just kill living things by mere eye contact at most and simply paralyze via reflection at least (though I guess it makes sense when you put into account phoenixes are immune to their gaze and those fangs of theirs can still do some damage if they end up blinded).

Just thinking about your venom question, basilisks probably have venomous fangs for dealing with any large and blind magical creatures. Or, it could be that there's other creatures besides phoenixes which are immune to their stare - I do wonder what would happen if a basilisk looked another basilisk in the eye. Alternatively, it could be that basilisks have both their venom and their killer gaze (an unnecessarily-extreme predatory combo) simply because they're not naturally-occurring creatures - they're created by incubating a chicken's egg under a toad if I remember correctly.

I'm not entirely satisfied with my design of her, but as an experiment, I think she's fine.

As for the movies portrayal of her, I really like that they used an animatronic puppet like for Jurassic Park. Sure she just looks like a giant snake, but I like to pretend that it's a magical censorship for us viewers. Otherwise we'd all be petrified in our seats. XD

The only thing I'm a bit disappointed in the movie's portrayal of her is that they make a big deal of her eyes. They are hyped up to be horrible, huge and yellow... a feature that's supposed to the first thing you notice. Yet, it's hardly anything that makes an impression when we see her. Kind of an "oh...." reaction.

I know what you mean about the eyes - as a child, for years I didn't notice any difference before and after the basilisk was blinded. x) On the other hand, I think it probably helps us the audience that the basilisk's eyes are so unremarkable with no glow or disturbing design when we see her - apart from Fawkes (and the petrified victims ^^)) the characters can never see her eyes while she's alive, and so making the eyes so non-special could probably help put one in Harry's position in the Chamber scenes.
