Description I've been reading an embarrassing amount of Labyrinth fanfiction lately, and it's depressing how many authors make Jareth out to be this horrible, violent, cruel, generally unfeeling wretch who takes out his jilted aggression on poor grown-up Sarah.

The appeal of Jareth is the appeal of all good villains; yes, he's a bastard. He's manipulative and arrogant and abusive of his power, but he's also very clever, romantic, softspoken, and goodness, he does try.

My point is that I get tickled all to heck when I find an author who gives me exactly what I crave, and one of them is Kytten , whose short n' sweet one-shots are the antidote for every angst pie I've accidentally swallowed.

This is fan art for one of her stories, in which Sarah, after three years without a word from Jareth, says fuck it, packs a few things and goes back to the Underground. Jareth discovers her hanging out in the garden, waiting for him. The cookie was my idea. It is a raspberry jam cookie.

I have various issues with this, but the funniest are these: because Jareth's gloves are black, it kind of looks like he has no hands. And I meant for Jareth to be looking at Sarah, but since the cookie is directly between him and Sarah, he appears to be confused and beguiled by the jam cookie, and not the girl he's been pining for. I'm wondering how many more times I can put Jareth and cookie in the same sentence.

Jareth and cookie needs to be in the same sentence more often.

I love the look on Sarah's face. And her hat. And her very shapely yummy legs.

This is so cute, I just have to read that fanfiction now.

Wow. This is too cute! XD I love how she just held up her hand and shoved the cookie in his face and he's all "O_o; Em..wtf?" And I especially love how you recognized that his left eye appeared hazel. I thought I was the only one who noticed! <3

And I know what you mean! Jareth's no saint, but he
does have a heart.

He loves her. He was crying when he sang "Within You."

I love this idea. And the fact that you made him pine for
the jam cookie. Haha

Very nice, the faces are quite well adjusted to the style and I must say we have in my country a cookie looking just like that and is called: "angel eyes".

Ah, I feel your pain...I've given up on reading Labyrinth fan fics, due to painfully bad writing skills and poor character developement. However, I am definetly going to have to check this one out, since you gave it your seal of approval.

I really think this this picture is amusing. I love Sarah's expression. No longer is she the wide-eyed girl so easily duped into his devious ploys. I like that you shown her as an adult ready to give him a run for his money. I have no doubt that he will rise to the occasion once he gets over the initial shock. lol. The raspberry jam cookie is a delightfully delicious addition, very clever.

All in all a very well rendered piece, even when I saw the small thumbnail, I knew exactly who these characters were and it enticed me to take a closer look! Bravo, Bravo

Lol. This picture made my day.

It's true -- a lot of people make Jareth too evil, but conversely there are authors who make him too sweet and sensitive. Hard to find a good medium...

Anywho, great picture

Lollercopters.
Sarah is drawn amazingly well. For some reason, I really like how her nose is drawn.
My only crit: Jareth's face looks too big in comparison to his body. Or perhaps something is off about his body's proportions in comparison to his face?

I have huge issues with how Jareth's face turned out, but for the life of me I couldn't seem to fix it. So, he stays lookin' bizarre. ;D

*giggle* Okay, this? Hands-down, my favorite of your Labyrinth pieces, which is saying a lot. (Wallpaper on my computer and everything . . . so much love.)

I have a serious soft spot for any flavor of assertive Sarah. (I think it comes of me actually agreeing with the end of the movie, unlike a lot of Labyrinth fangirls.) Clearly I need to read the fic this was inspired by!

The picture is so brilliant, though. I am in love with their expressions, particularly Sarah's. (She looks so impish!) Her pose/anatomy is just fantastic too, and . . . have I ever mentioned that your coloring is generally to die for? So balanced, so warm, such lovely shading . . . Jareth's gloves could maybe use a subtle light-colored outline, but that's about the only crit I can think of.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lily-fox In reply to bellechevalier [2008-01-09 01:21:06 +0000 UTC]

If you're looking at it seriously (which is hard because, come on), I don't see how anyone could disagree with the end of the flick. Like, she was rescuing her baby brother. I'd have murdered Jareth with my bare hands for my little sister, and there have been times when I think I'd have idly wished her away. If Toby hadn't been an issue, though, it'd be real tough to say no to that voice.

I'm a fan of assertive Sarah as well. The reason she bested him was that she's very clever and driven, and writers often forget that. They just make her a snot, or sexually weak. She's a woman, y'all!

I'm really glad you like this so much. I'm fond of Sarah's anatomy, too. I think it's very sexy for girls to have big hips and bottoms like that. Ha ha, yeah, I think I should have just stolen Jareth's gloves. They're just an affectation anyway!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bellechevalier In reply to lily-fox [2008-01-09 04:03:47 +0000 UTC]

Oh, sure: I think most people would agree that she needed to save Toby. But even without Toby . . . I agree with her rejecting Jareth's offer, and I'm not sure how much agreement I'd meet with on that one. Probably it's me taking it slightly too seriously, still, but there it is.

Yes, precisely! I mean, she was a little snotty, but that was when she was 15. If you're going to write older!Sarah, I think some maturity is in line, as well as the strength she already obviously had.

*grin* Yes, I am fond of curves, there's no denying it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lily-fox In reply to bellechevalier [2008-01-09 04:40:29 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I agree with you. What he was offering was an illusion. She'd miss out on all the goodness of reality, all the sweetness and pain and majesty of normalcy. I think I would have turned him down, but I have a terrible weakness for a man in love.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bellechevalier In reply to lily-fox [2008-01-09 14:04:39 +0000 UTC]

Well, I like to think they'd have a chance for something later, maybe, once she was older and able to conduct a romance on her own terms anyway. Wouldn't object to a mix of reality and fantasy, I just think that Jareth's offers itself didn't have anything of reality in them at all. One of the reasons I like to see Sarah take charge, heh.

Dear lord. You know, I haven't thought this much about Labyrinth in years.

*laughs* Aw, see, the trouble is that the Labyrinth fanfic that lives in my head is a humongous epic! And I really don't have time for that, not with my other projects.

Maybe I'll dabble in some shorter stuff. It's certainly on my mind, now! But it'll have to wait a little, things at my new job are going to be super hectic for the next few weeks.

I hear that. I hope things at your work steady out sooner rather than later, because I'm going to LOVE reading what you got. Please drop me a note when you've got something you can share with us.

Writing an epic is something I've never had the stamina for. I love short stories. They're the work of passionate, lazy bastards like me. You feel like giving me an outline of your epic story? I'd love to hear it.

I hecka want to eat one of those jam cookies now! O__O! But my sister just ate the last one.. Guess it's time to go find a recipe!~

My only criticism would have to be that Sarah's head seems a bit large in proportion to her body, but other than that, the illustration is adorable.

I actually prefer drama/angst over fluff n' stuff when I read fanfiction haha~ But I do agree with you in that some authors really overdo the "evil" bit and leave you a bit put out at the near one-dimensional nature of their characterization of Jareth.

lily-fox In reply to yukis-butterfly [2008-01-08 07:33:15 +0000 UTC]

Totally. Handling angst with style is tricky. Like cilantro in cooking. You gotta know.

yukis-butterfly In reply to lily-fox [2008-01-09 09:12:06 +0000 UTC]

This is probably the far most cited "best" story, but my favourite Labyrinth fanfiction would still have to be "A Forfeit of Dreams" by KL Morgan (and believe me, I blaze through this stuff like Ferrero Rochers during finals season). Just the right amount of angst..but with a rather agreeable happy ending! The sequel...I wasn't too keen on that, partially because of its .00032% of ever being updated again.

I used to eat cilantro by the bunches when I was a child. Strange, seeing as everyone else in my family seems to detest it.

If you like a character or movie, you generally shouldn't read any fanfiction about it. It's terrible and twisted, not to mention will ruin your view and love of that character for all time. Internet tip #309.

Are you kidding? Fanfiction is the cure for the post-movie blues! Labyrinth practically laid out a mat for it. And it's totally worth the lame, angsty stuff to find the sweetness.
