I've been reading an embarrassing amount of Labyrinth fanfiction lately, and it's depressing how many authors make Jareth out to be this horrible, violent, cruel, generally unfeeling wretch who takes out his jilted aggression on poor grown-up Sarah.The appeal of Jareth is the appeal of all good villains; yes, he's a bastard. He's manipulative and arrogant and abusive of his power, but he's also very clever, romantic, softspoken, and goodness, he does try.
My point is that I get tickled all to heck when I find an author who gives me exactly what I crave, and one of them is Kytten , whose short n' sweet one-shots are the antidote for every angst pie I've accidentally swallowed.
This is fan art for one of her stories, in which Sarah, after three years without a word from Jareth, says fuck it, packs a few things and goes back to the Underground. Jareth discovers her hanging out in the garden, waiting for him. The cookie was my idea. It is a raspberry jam cookie.
I have various issues with this, but the funniest are these: because Jareth's gloves are black, it kind of looks like he has no hands. And I meant for Jareth to be looking at Sarah, but since the cookie is directly between him and Sarah, he appears to be confused and beguiled by the jam cookie, and not the girl he's been pining for. I'm wondering how many more times I can put Jareth and cookie in the same sentence.

I must concur with what outinthestorm said. The choice of form on Sarah is very well done. This style you draw this drawing in reminds me of the Yellow submarine movie. I that retro kind of way.
BTW....I have never see Labyrinth...but my roommate has the DVD. I will have to watch it.

There are many things I love about this.
Her hat! it's so floppy and cute and even has a flower! What's not to love?
She has thighs! And proper breasts!
(I know that's a stupid comment, but so many Sarahs are thin and waif like - good to see one with meat on her bones!)
And his expression is totally priceless!

Pika-la-Cynique and chippiparai are two of my favorite artists, and they tend to draw their girls with lovely big, curvy bottoms and thighs. I really love that, and realized that I draw too many skinny girls. (I love skinny girls, too. I love them all!) I think i made her look so curvy because my sister is, and she's always looked very much like Jen Connelly.

I think it's cute. Even if Jareth is slightly enamoured by the cookie and Sarah. It looks like he's completly bewildered by it all... The cookie, Sarah being back. Everything.

im glad this is not an obsession of mine alone. I for some reason just started readind a TON of labyrinth fanfiction too. i try to stay away from the angst... but i read one the other day... it depressed me and almost made me hate jareth, that was scary. but i have a feeling its actually you and your marvelous updates that started my spree of reading... but i thank you for it ^ w ^

There was one I started reading... Ergott's "Bodice Ripper". You start out loathing Jareth and wanting him to fall into a meat grinder, but after a few chapters you learn a few secrets and he starts to become very romantic. It's wonderful, and that's how a story should be. Characters shouldn't be statically bad, you know?

I too have been reading an embarrassing amount of Labyrinth fanfiction lately, and while a good old dark angst-y evil Jareth is fun every now and then, I like to think of him more along the idea that she wanted him to be scary, so he was. See the line in the movie: "You cowered; I was frightening."
Anyway, this is too cute. I get excited every time I see you have put up a new Labyrinth piece.

That's a good point. My sister said she thought he had everything under control, even when he was doing horrible things like chasing her with the knife wheel or sending his army after her. Like, the second things got out of hand he'd have been there to rescue her.

I actually imagine Jareth similar to Peter Pan... a man with power and influence but stuck in the mind of a boy. (well, the best example of this I think is the Peter Pan starring Jeremy Sumpter because in that one it shows he does desire to know romance... but he's stubborn to hold onto what he's become. If that makes sense...Jareth is King. His world is best, but he is lonely... but only for his equal.)

I think maybe Jareth is a soured version of what Pan would become post-Wendy. Scarred with heartbreak, jaded, mischievous, used to getting his way, used to bossing others around.
Which brings up an issue I've been wondering about; what is Jareth? A magician, a goblin, an elf, a wizard, a faerie? The devil?

Have you read Return to Labyrinth by Tokyopop? (manga) They have an interesting take on things with a new story. I'm not sure I like ti altogether but I was happy to see something being done with the story.
The novelization... I read it. But it was a long time ago. I was just thinking recently I'd like to read it again and found it's quite a collector's item online o.O Wish I had gotten a copy then.

I think most writers sort of project themselves onto their characters. I mean, you kind of have to, to write what you know. Being a pretty indefatigably happy girl, I like to imagine Jareth as having a naturally good side that Sarah brings out of him.

agreed all around- Jareth is a terribly manipulative you-know-what, who some times deserves a good swatt between the legs. But we all refrain because we know there's another side- a sensetive bloke who at least knows his lady's mind.

My mom makes this sugar cookie dough that's so good I want to punch myself in the face. She gave me a big ball of it and I made jam cookies with it. And then Jareth showed up and he was like, "Give me those cookies." And I said, "You want these cookies, Jareth, you got to put on this apron and MAKE you some god damn cookies." And naturally he threw a big snit and didn't want to wear the apron with the ruffles and the flower on the pocket, so I gave him my Starbucks apron and told him to roll out the dough. Big surprise---nobody ever taught him how to roll cookie dough, so I turn around and he's trying to smoosh it flat with his hands. So I give him the rolling pin and show him how to use it, but he can't get the hang of it and it starts pissing him off, and bits of dough are flying hither and thither (the goblins ate whatever fell). So I take the rolling pin away and roll out the dough, and I tell him to cut out the cookie halves, but he makes them all into obscene shapes...
It was a mess. But he did get his cookies.

It's honestly good to see Labyrinth has taken another soul *cackles* xD. It happened to me in summer of 2006, and worked out for me the best real life friendship I could ever wish for. I say this movie should say something special to everyone!
As for the picture, it's refreshing to see someone see markers, instead of just photoshop. I love the way Jareth look all lost at the cookie x3 .. and that he instinctly grabs for his stomach.. XD
