Description I've been reading an embarrassing amount of Labyrinth fanfiction lately, and it's depressing how many authors make Jareth out to be this horrible, violent, cruel, generally unfeeling wretch who takes out his jilted aggression on poor grown-up Sarah.

The appeal of Jareth is the appeal of all good villains; yes, he's a bastard. He's manipulative and arrogant and abusive of his power, but he's also very clever, romantic, softspoken, and goodness, he does try.

My point is that I get tickled all to heck when I find an author who gives me exactly what I crave, and one of them is Kytten , whose short n' sweet one-shots are the antidote for every angst pie I've accidentally swallowed.

This is fan art for one of her stories, in which Sarah, after three years without a word from Jareth, says fuck it, packs a few things and goes back to the Underground. Jareth discovers her hanging out in the garden, waiting for him. The cookie was my idea. It is a raspberry jam cookie.

I have various issues with this, but the funniest are these: because Jareth's gloves are black, it kind of looks like he has no hands. And I meant for Jareth to be looking at Sarah, but since the cookie is directly between him and Sarah, he appears to be confused and beguiled by the jam cookie, and not the girl he's been pining for. I'm wondering how many more times I can put Jareth and cookie in the same sentence.

*heh* The hand on his ribs was just a move of astonishment. That's where my hand goes when I'm astonished. But could be unconsciously cookie-related.

WELL, Labyrinth captured my flag when I was like, twelve, so it's been a long time coming with the art. My soul belongs to Bowie, I'm afraid. And jam cookies.

You're just as bad as my friend at that then. All her Ziggy stardust stuff scares me xD

Sadly I had never seen it till I was 19, I'm sure that if I had seen it at 12 it would have rotten me far earlier then it has now xD

You're starting to inspire me to draw snobby Jareth again

Rather spiffing. I must plead guilty to suffering from a serious case of I-repeatedly-write-Jareth-as-one-total-badassitis, but that isn't to say I don't like fluffy things too .

Anyway, it's a beautiful illustration - Sarah's expression is perfect.

Well, it's like I said, Jareth totally works as a jerk, and angst can be appropriate and awesome, but there has to be more to it, you know? Making Jareth an asshole just to be an asshole is mean and boring. Is he an asshole with no remorse? Or is he an asshole because he's in love and he's cranky and there are chickens in his bed and he really needs a woman to look after him?

Oh I do know what you mean. I don't generally like stories were Jareth is evil without having reason to be. That is, essentially, the case in the stories by Subtillor, but they're just so wonderfully written and imaginative it didn't matter to me.

I'd like to think that my version of Jareth has reasons, good reasons to be as nasty as he is. There's too many to explain in much depth but it mainly revolves around the fact he attempted to be relatively accommodating and well at times, nice, to Sarah, which got him nowhere. In my version of events, this approach is entirely new and used because he wants Sarah to firstly understand him, and secondly for her to stay. He’s lonely, bored and dissatisfied and Sarah is much better company than a Goblin. He was, in other words, treating Sarah differently to how he treated everyone else in order to win some respect from her. When his attempts at kindness fail, he returns to the methods ingrained inside him after a thousand years spent wielding absolute power; he becomes cruel because he is under the impression that cruelty is the only way he will get what he wants.

Hopefully I've got it across that I haven't made him evil simply for the sake of being evil. I haven't really explained all that in the story itself, mainly because I'm writing it from Sarah's POV and she can't bring herself to comprehend that, in Jareth's mind, the fault lies with her - she thinks he is literally being evil for the sake of being evil and is out to do nothing less than destroy her.

It’s essentially a story about two self-absorbed uncompromising people who can hardly begin to comprehend each other. If there’s one thing anyone can say about my story, it’s that it’s cynical

Sorry for the big explanation, I got a bit carried away back there! I need to remember I’m on DA, not a discussion forum!

Discuss away, girl! You're totally welcome to do it here.

I do understand what you mean. I mean, he IS sort of evil, that's his character. He's not nice. And being heartbroken in love doesn't make a man want to be nicer. He's been spoiled and feared and revered for so long, along comes this girl who thinks she's hot shit (and she is), tells him his Labyrinth is a cakewalk, what, he's gonna treat her kindly? Heck no!

I'd be really interested to read your stories, if you'd like to share them with me. Are you on FF.net?

Yep, here's a link to the story I mentioned if you want to take a look, it's called Thursday's Child. I'll warn you though that it is very, very long and an equal amount of verys applies to the darkness-o-meter, although I'd like to think there are funny parts:

Thanks for the free license to blather on about Labyrinth, when I'm not so tired I'll have to concoct something else to discuss!

my word! what a wonderful way to begin Bowie Birthday Celebration Week....I wonder if you have something planned for tomorrow

I had read & loved that 'lil fic, and guiltiest of pleasures...Labyrinthfanfiction and capuccino (while wearing glasses to look even dorkier ) I could send you a couple links to some not "evil jareth" fics if you want...someday, I enjoy -even if I won't say it loudly- the angstiness too.

what a beautiful pic, Sarah is totally beautiful & mischievous in your style, was she wearing shorts in the fic?
I love her rossy cheeks, she looks so vivid and like a doll, both at the same time (Hmmm more blur on photoshop next time?)
this Jareth looks more cartoon-like compared to the one from "the devil's dance floor" but it suits certainly -and probably you planned it this way- the light humor of the fic.
and so pretty setting you draw there! the bench far better than simple grass... and loved the cookie idea...poor Jareth, seems to have problems to decide what to taste first; the cookie or the girl...decisions, decisions...

Ohhh, I don't have anything special for tomorrow---just my true and everlasting love. ^_^ But if I can get my act together for a belated birthday drawing...

You know, angst can work, but there has to be redemption and salvation. Sad endings are cop-outs. No, you know what? Sad endings are just lame. Giving an angsty story a happy ending takes work and ingenuity and talent. Flogging the downtrodden is lame and lazy. There, I said it.

Yes, I would love any links you'd like to pass my way, thank you.

Ha ha, I don't know what she was wearing the story, I just fudged it. (I didn't use blur---I always mess it up.) I think Sarah looks so much like my sister, who is also incredibly beautiful.

The hardest part of this was doing a comic expression on Jareth. I can probably count on one hand all the times Bowie has ever been photographed making a face.

I am sure HE enjoys knowing his fans are out there celebrating for him... all that everlasting love certainly reach him, right?

hmmm I do like some angst WHIT a happy ending (when I don't like happy endings on most things I read... mannn if I ever wrote down my list of favourite authors and books, people would wonder why I haven't cut my wrists yet)

I will then (though right now I only have one which is quite old and unfinished the others I don't know if you have read yeat but I think they are more popular)

awww your sister should do some cosplay then jk

with the upcoming festivities new & old pics will be re-posted around the net, I will be posting a few on my Bowie devoted fav livejournal community too , soon you will find yourself covered with tons of reference pics !!!

as much as I love Pika's art I was thinking about somebody else (and I know first hand she can draw & colour perfectly those pants) Mercuralis is very talented too, but there is something about traditional media that makes a pic UNIQUE.
soyez pas si modeste there is no need to be so humble... you do a wonderful work, full of creativity and with a unique style that puts you appart from the other artists around here

Ha! For true! The best compliment to a drawing I can think of is fanfiction! And then if I like it, I'll draw some fanart for it... It's a delicious cycle.

You can interpret a drawing any way you like, so it's nice that it can inspire different stories. has done a couple where she'll just present and image and say "go to town", and people will write stories based on it. I'd like to do that, when I get a good enough idea, see what people come up with.

The best thing about this is how comfortable she looks, I mean, she definitely looks like she belongs in the garden nibbling on cookies. Jareth looks completely out of place, haha. That man needs to invest in some jeans.

The details are what really make this. It's simple, and yet .. not. His hair is especially intriguing, as is her face, which is beautifully rendered. And for some reason her shoes. Those .. are some really good shoes, haha.

Anyway, Im really impressed with this, is there anything you can't do?? Hehe

*^_^* Gee! Thank you. I hate drawing feet and boots, but I love drawing sneakers. They do look pretty comfy. And ooph, his hair is a CHALLENGE. It mocks me. His area mocks me, too, but I refuse to acknowledge it.

Often there is a basket of stuff in my drawings, and I like to play What Could Be In the Basket?

Oh, that would either be so cool or horribly restrictive. Could i command others to illustrate my fanfics? You must, it's the law!

Or would i be unable to post until i could draw something better than two stick figures saying 'I shood be holding a sword!'
'i haves a sword! I CUT YOU!'

Ah, well. No one asks us how to run the world....dammit.

I wonder if it would add or detract from this pic if Sarah was looking at her book instead of Jareth? Still smirking, still offering the cookie, but in that 'I know you're there, i don't even have to look' style some people/characters get to show that they're far more in control of the situation than you are...
