From what I can tell your drawing was just as ambiguous as the concept art (and possibly more lovely!) which is what got me thinking out loud. I've seen the black part depicted each way in fan art, but it'd be nice to have a concrete answer one day. I guess it will always be one of those great mysteries of gaming.
