“The Return”--
The year is 1984…Godzilla had not been seen for the last ten years. All of the other monsters were quiet…most of the time. After the first year of Godzilla’s inactivity, a search party of Mothra, Rodan and Anguirus went out looking for him. However, they didn’t locate him. Other monsters joined in on the search for Godzilla as well…Soon it was nearly an all out globe-trotting search just to find the King of the Monsters. Eventually, nearly all of the monsters gave up, except for the first three and a fourth; King Caesar. But Godzilla was not found…he was gone…just gone. But…the news was obvious…Godzilla had to be dead…
Now those 10 years had passed. The monsters still searched, but there was a sense that they had given up. They went quiet like the rest. The aliens stopped invading. Apart from the Tension of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union, everything was peaceful for a time.
However one day, a Japanese fishing vessel was caught in a vicious storm 100 miles south of Tokyo. In the lighting, a large explosion ensured creating a massive light. Silhouetted by the blast is what looks like a mountain rising up out of the ocean. One of the sailors aboard sees this and makes out what looks like a large creature and hears (hidden by the crashing waves and thunder) what sounds like a monstrous roar.
Days later, reporter Maki Goro, was out on the sea. He finds the vessel still intact and explores it. Inside, he finds all of the crew dead, somehow killed by radioactive poisoning or otherwise drained of blood. However, he finds a young man Hiroshi Okumura in a lead based cabinet, still alive, holding onto a steak knife for defense. However, before he can awaken the injured man, he is attacked by a mutant Sea Louse. He manages to stab it in the gut with a knife, but that only slows the creature down. The thing is finally killed when Hiroshi woke up and stabbed it with a Butcher’s knife.
Back on deck, Hiroshi tries to explain what he saw. Goro is excited by the news. Ever since Godzilla’s disappearance, he hadn’t been able to do any reports on Monster Activity. No stories what so ever, so he was glad to get one again…Little did he know…this story would not only plunge him back into the business but plunge the world into terror.
Upon returning to Tokyo, Hiroshi realizes just what he saw on the sea by looking at pictures that were taken almost thirty years ago. Scientists also did studies on the mutant Sea Louse. Apparently it was mutated by parasitic feeding on a rather large creature. The Radioactive signature was unique…familiar. This information is kept out of the news. No one is to know about it. Goro is outraged that his editor will not print a story on the incident. His editor replies that the creature’s identity must remain a secret. Goro orders to know what the secret is. The answer he got, he simply could not believe.
“The Secret is…Godzilla.”
After 10 years, there was complete evidence that Godzilla was back. While Goro suspected that this news would excite the world, it would also cause panic. Godzilla had become a friendly creature. But he hadn’t destroyed a ship for years. So why would he start now? It’s almost like Godzilla was returning to his old habits. If word of this got out it could cause widespread fear that he would return to Tokyo. Godzilla had to remain out of the public’s ears.
But Godzilla didn’t comply as a Soviet Submarine went down. It was clear that Godzilla was the cause of this attack. However, the Soviets believe that this attack was caused by America. This started tension between the two nations that could result in a Nuclear War. Luckily the Japanese intervene before either Nations do something they regret. After much debate, the Prime Minister of Japan decided that Nuclear weapons would not be used on Godzilla should the creature attack, much to the begrudge of the US and Russia. The creature did after all feed off of nuclear radiation; throwing nukes at him would just be fueling the fire. The Russians however, do not believe this to be true. The JSDF began sweeping the ocean for any sign of the creature while the media swarmed on the scene. It was time for the world to know that Godzilla was back.
News of his return shocked the world. Children who thought the world of Godzilla were now grown adults. But those who remembered what happened the first time Godzilla appeared were now old…they still remembered it like it was yesterday. Especially one certain individual; Steve Martin. He was one of the individuals that always saw Godzilla for what he originally was. When Godzilla reawakened in 55, he retreated into an underground bunker he had built underneath his house. He had the place built specifically as a shelter in case Godzilla ever came to America, and he stocked it with enough supplies to last until the next century. He stayed down there for nearly 20 years, ignoring all of the pleas that his family made to come out. But when Godzilla had disappeared ten years ago, he finally stepped out into fresh air again.
Martin, now a silver-haired grandfather was ready to spend his retirement years in peace, watching after his grandson. However, the night of the big storm, when Godzilla’s roar sounded in the thunder, Martin heard it in his dreams. He quickly awoke from the horrible nightmare. He figured that it was nothing more than a memory haunting his sleep. However, whenever he saw his Grandson playing with his Godzilla toys, an item which he greatly begrudged, he was always reminded of the terrible day thirty years ago. Then the day came where a military officer came to Martin’s house to take him to the Pentagon. Martin said he knew why they were here as he put down the newspaper revealing the headlines ‘Godzilla Lives.’
Goro, Hiroshi and his sister join forces with her sister’s employer, Professor Hayashida. The professor lost his parents during the 54 attack and devoted his life to studying Godzilla to find some sort of weakness. His research led him to the conclusion that Godzilla is indeed indestructible…immortal one might say. Godzilla is a living Nuclear Bomb, doomed forever to walk the earth, destroying everything in his path. A child of Mother Nature, born from man’s disharmony with her. Now the four of them began working to find a way to stop Godzilla if he returned.
It wasn’t long before Godzilla appeared. He landed on an island with a Nuclear Reactor. The destruction was minimal with Godzilla only going for the reactor. The engineers tried their best to shut it down, but it was too late. As Godzilla held the reactor in his hands, his spines began to glow. Everyone knew what that meant; Godzilla was feeding. He was being recharged and all knew that would mean certain doom as the onlookers were mesmerized by the blue color. However, suddenly a high pitched squawking was heard and Godzilla looked up. Hiroshi noticed this while Goro was taking photographs. While reviewing them, Hiroshi finally saw the truth: a flock of birds had flown overhead and Godzilla began following them. When the professor said that Godzilla’s brain was similar to that of a Bird, he knew his theory was right. Godzilla was attracted by the sound and followed it. Now the Professor had a plan. If they could amplify the sound of bird calls, Godzilla would follow them anywhere they wanted him to go. It was almost too perfect. Now they had a plan for Godzilla. They would lure him to the Mount Mihara, create a controlled eruption and trap Godzilla in the crater.
While the Pentagon officials were busy trying to decide what to do about Godzilla, Mr. Martin appeared. He stated that he knew that conventional weapons were useless on Godzilla. He described Godzilla as a Hurricane or Typhoon and should be approached as a force of Nature. He stated that they must understand him, deal with him and perhaps even communicate with him. The general was upset by all of this, stating that the Japanese killed him thirty years ago…Martin turned to him and said something entirely too shocking.
“Just for the record…thirty years ago, they never found any corpse.”
The Japanese Prime minister signed off on Professor Hayashida’s plan. Of course there was another plan. In secret, the Japanese air-force had developed a new weapon; Super X Attack Jet, a huge hovercraft, plated in heat resilient armor and armed to the teeth with rockets and missiles. It was the best weapon in case Godzilla attacked. The minister signed off on that plan as well. Of course the Super X would have to be armed with Cadmium missiles to do affective damage to Godzilla. Regardless, both plans when worked together would be useful; Super X would keep Godzilla distracted from the city and the Professor’s plan would get him away from the city because of his own instincts. But then that was a bad thing. Godzilla was working on his instincts again…and his original instincts told him to go strait for Tokyo. But at least his instincts would defeat him and trap him…maybe even kill him. But the professor said that the volcano wouldn’t kill him…it couldn’t. Saying that Godzilla was a force of nature meant that he couldn’t be destroyed. He could only be taken back into Mother Nature’s arms. All the professor wants now is to send him home.
But…Ironically, the Professor was right…Godzilla appeared outside of Tokyo bay. After ten years he finally returned to Tokyo. Godzilla was coming home. He first cleared away the fighter jets that tried to stop him. They were mere toys to him. He then attacked the ground forces that had been set up to stop him. During the attack the waves he created accidentally knocked a Russian Freighter around killing nearly everyone on board…but this ship wasn’t a Freighter. The Russians didn’t agree to not use Nuclear Weapons on Godzilla. That ship contained the launch controls for a Nuclear Missile Satellite in outer space over the Gulf of Mexico. One of the Russians aboard was bleeding and dying. However, before he lost all life, he managed to press the red button and start the countdown. The missile would soon be launched.
Godzilla moved onto Tokyo, his radioactive fire spitting from his mouth. He chased a crowd of people, stepping on them like insects. He picked up a subway train and looked in on the people inside. Many of those grown people were children who grew up admiring Godzilla…It was frightening to see Godzilla this way. Soon the army set up laser shooting tanks previously used on Ghidrah and Gigan to lure Godzilla into an open area away from the buildings.
The JSDF were working fast to get the Cadmium shells onto the Super X. Meanwhile the Professor and his cohorts were testing the bird frequency and managed to attract Godzilla towards the building they were in. However, his tail damaged the building shutting down the elevators. They tried to use the stairs to get to the roof but metal plates had rolled down over the door leading to the roof. And they were strong, not even a drill could cut them. The professor watched as the laser tanks attacked Godzilla.
The Super X launched and was headed for Godzilla. The large silver attack craft shined its lights on Godzilla getting his attention. They shot a flare into the air. Ever since 1955 it was no secret that Godzilla was attracted to heat and bright lights. The flare distracted him from the Super X. Once Godzilla roared at it, the attack jet shot cadmium shells into his mouth. Godzilla shot his breath at it in retaliation but the armor shielding proved to be adequate. Then another flare was shot up, Godzilla fell for it again, opening his mouth. Two cadmium shells were shot into his mouth. Soon Godzilla’s loud heartbeat was heard as he staggered around. Godzilla then collapsed and fell into a nearby building.
Martin and the Professor however, even from on different sides of the world didn’t believe Godzilla was dead. But now matters were worse as the Soviet Missile was launched. The US launched one of their own missiles to intercept the missile. Martin however knew what the affects of a Nuclear Blast would have on Godzilla…and the blast would be thirty times that of Hiroshima. Martin said, “No matter what happens, Godzilla will live.”
The Hiyashida and Hiroshi and made it to the escape copter to leave the building and get to Mt. Mihara. However, the turbulence was too great and the copter could not stay to pick up the other two. They made it down to the streets and slid down a fire hose to get to the ground…however, something terrible had happened. The missiles intercepted each other right over the city, creating a large red fog of radioactivity. The blast shorted out nearly all technological devices in the area and even knocked out one of the Super X’s turbines. But this was just the beginning.
Like on Solgel Island, nuclear radiation in the atmosphere caused a Radioactive Storm. However, this one was just a lightning storm. But it was indeed tragic for the radioactive lighting struck the only other source of Radioactivity in the city…Godzilla. His entire body was electrically charged and turned bright blue with other worldly light. Suddenly Godzilla’s eyes shot open and he growled with the intent of wreaking terrible retribution. Godzilla stood up and was prepared to unleash his wrath. Godzilla was indeed alive.
The Super X did everything to get back into the air. The ship fled behind a building but Godzilla blasted right through it. Then Godzilla chased after the ship. The Super X unloaded all of its missiles and lasers at Godzilla. He returned fire with his atomic heat ray. The jet plane seemed to now be affected by the heat this time. It wasn’t long before the plane went down. Godzilla then knocked over a large building and crushed the ship, his dark roars sending a message. It seemed to say that Godzilla was back and he was here to stay. That’s when he spotted Goro and the girl. He began to chase them and he nearly had them cornered. But that’s when he suddenly turned away.
Hiroshi and Hiyashida had made it to Mt. Mihara. The charges around the crater had been set and now it was time to lay the bait. They had finished setting up the large antenna that would send the bird signal. Once they started it up, Godzilla heard it even miles away in Tokyo. He began to walk away. He left the city and went to the ocean. He swam toward the island where the volcano was. He walked up onto the island and up to the volcano. The antenna sending out the signal was across the crater. There was clear indication that Godzilla knew there was danger but he couldn’t fight his instincts. He took one step and fell into the Volcano. He landed on a smaller edge inside. And that’s when the charges were set off.
Godzilla’s roars of terror seemed to blot out the sound of the volcanic eruption. It was strange. After everything he’d just done to Tokyo, he looked so innocent falling into the volcano. Suddenly all of Japan was reminded of the various times he’d fought to save them from the space monsters. It was clear that that Godzilla was gone, perhaps forever. Godzilla was now once again a creature of instinct, and they proved to be his undoing. It was actually a sad moment…but no tears of sorrow or regret were shed. Only tears of happiness. Godzilla had been subdued and fell into the crater of Mount Hihara. After it was over and Godzilla’s last terrified shriek was heard, Martin began to give a speech.
“Nature has a way sometimes of reminding man of just how small he is. She occasionally throws up the terrible offspring of our pride and carelessness to remind us of how puny we really are in the face of a tornado, an earthquake or a Godzilla. The reckless ambitions of man are often dwarfed by their dangerous consequences. For now, Godzilla, that strangely innocent and tragic monster, has gone to her. Whether he returns or not or is never again seen by human eyes, the things he has taught us remain.”
But like the Professor said…Godzilla was not dead.

y'know i actually think the 1995 ending is quite sad due to the second shriek godzilla makes when he fell to the volcano.
