Description As long as I was close to the sea in my other paintings, I thought I might as well try a maritime painting. I'm pleased with the way the waves turned out -- I had sketched them in rather quickly and expected to have to fiddle with them, but they just seemed to work. The cutter, I knew, was going to be a problem. I wanted it up close, but knew that I could not get the details -- both because I did not have anything to work from to get the rigging and sails just right, and also, given the sketchy nature of the painting, it would not look right if the cutter was painted in great detail, so different from its setting. It turned out about as well as I could have expected, I guess. But all in all, I think I will try to explore other ways of painting ships and the sea... hopefully (since I like painting waves....)

Great sense of movement, and in every sense that appeals to me, a finished work. Really pleased to have come across this piece - it's got my Saturday off to a nice start!

Thanks. I actually had another one like that on the board for a while several weeks ago, but couldn't get too exited about it and painted something else instead. I'm a big fan of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin stories and was thinking of doing a small tender in the foreground with the HMS Surprise in the distant background, but my skill has it's limits...

Thanks. The waves worked, everything else is pretty clunky.

You did just fine in my book, Frontal shot is dramatic,
looks like the cutters fighting its way through the waves, Looks like you used gold or deep yellow for the
clouds underlings instead of grey, silver or blue-gray
traditionaly, An interesting choice!

Keep'em coming! Excelsior!

Thank you. I don't like cool skies, so I use greens, browns and golds to warm up the blueness a bit. I also like unorganized skies to capture a mood without pinning it down to a moment. Just what those golds are doing in the sky, I, like Mary Poppins, don't explain. ('cause I don't know.)

Its all good! Using green for the sky reminds me of the old
"Forbidden Planet" film, The matte painter used green tint
for the sky. (High oxygen content)

Being a SF fan, Forbidden Planet was a favorite movie because it actually seemed like real SF in a movie format. However, I only watched it on TV -- in black and white in those days -- but I'll take your word the sky was green.

Somethings are better in color, Plunk down a few bucks and
See Forbidden Planet in color! You're missing a treat! ( That
classic battle with the Id monster and Disney animator Josh
Meador's artwork is worth the price of the dvd!

P.S. Rumor mill has it that James Cameron is planning a remake!

It is surprising that they haven't re-made it already, considering the remakes they've done already....

I'll have to see if the library has a copy...

Gone with the Wind and stand back and hear fans howl! I'm all
for an update though as long as its done by a good director

Truth be told, just as some people don't like to read, I don't like to "watch". The last movie I saw in a theater was a James Bond one, with Roger Moore... and I probably can count on my two hands the TV shows I've followed since then, and none in this century. In part, the constant commercials are simply too annoying. But it has to be more than that, since I can pick up DVDs and avoid the commercials... I simply find I have no desire to "watch" any more... I guess I've got too many other ways to waste my time.

No need to explain, I don't watch much tv either (except for the news) Theres nothing really worth watching, Garbage, Garbage, and more
Garbage!!! Last good shows i watched were The X-files which
had some of the best writing to be found on any Sf show past
or present! And Dharma and Greg which was actually FUNNY!
These days i just watch dvds of Anime, Classic movies and TV shows, some Westerns,
I Dream of Jeannie and Voyage to the bottom of the Sea(Great Theme music!) does it for me every time!
C-ya!
