Description
18x24" 45x60cm acrylic on hardboardWell, that was a rather long and unexpected break in painting. I had put aside my paint brushes just before the holidays, and only now have I found the motivation to pick them up again. And now, simply because it's been so long, and the last picture I painted was a winter scene, and winter's behind us now. With a thousand paintings in the basement I've come to believe that if there's not my masterpiece among them, there ain't going to be one. While painting this, I came to the realization that I'm going to have to find something new to say, and a different way of saying it in my paintings, if I'm going to continue to paint. I don't know what I want to say, so I don't know how I want to paint. Don't expect too many paintings for a while. Still, I've another story underway, so I'm keeping creative. Which is all I want.

Terrific scene and honest reflection. I’d say it’s time to be brave enough to make some mistakes and learn from them.

Thank you for thoughts. The different ways I've explored to paint all end up feeling like "art projects" which feel like work, rather than an authentic expression of what I have to say, which is fun. At the moment I feel like I'm just repeating myself, so I need to find something new to say -- and hopefully an interesting way to say it. Ah, but what?

I know what you mean. I tired of long projects that started with an idea that I loved at the start, but somehow turned into labour along the way. So I began making small ‘throw-away’ experimental paintings as a way of honing my craft, and some of these have taken on a life of their own. It's more fun if I can finish a project in a day, and I probably learn just as much as I do in a long project, if not more, because I’m more willing to push the boundaries.
Good luck with your own journey.

I would not try to completely change my painting style....just keep pushing that envelope a little farther on......

That's one option. I was thinking of pushing my impressions of scenes to just suggestions of scenes. This is half way there.

Thanks. As long as I'm doing something, I'm happy. The hours, and the days, fly by...

Almost. I started with this scene, then decided to paint it so vague as just to just suggest that there was something in the light, but ended up with a slightly more abstract version of the scene again. Still, I'll take what I get.
