[ gender : female // she/her ] [ occupation : bar tender ] [ partner : soleine ]
[ age : 21 // october 23   ] [ height : 5'7" // 170 cm ] [ weight : 147 lbs // 67 kg ]

 lvl : 1

partner : soleine
bond level : 0

a b i l i t i e s

[ BREATHLESS ]
+ + + user can manipulate the breathing of another person and cause anxiety; requires skin to skin contact, user must be holding their breath when using the power [ oliver can hold her breath for a maximum of three minutes thanks to a history of swimming ]
after-effects on the victims will be similar to the effects on the user. they don't last long, but will cause some level of disorientation.
- - - the power itself makes it very hard to hold one's breath. it causes the feeling of a heavy pressure on the chest and an acute sense of anxiety as a result.
using the power can cause dizziness, headaches, nausea, disorientation, fainting, and in the most severe outcome, death. if user does not hold their breath upon activating their power, the wind will be knocked out of them and they could faint.
the longer they use the power, the more severe the results. the user might look completely fine while using their power, but once the power is released all the poor effects will take place [ the amount of time oliver can hold her breath before the more severe symptoms takes place fluctuates depending on the level ]

[ LVL 1 ]
+ + + while in direct contact, user can cause their victim to feel as if they are unable to take in any air. victims cannot breathe at all, and will feel as if they are suffocating or being drowned. this can cause headaches, dizziness, disorientation, panic, and anxiety. [ maximum 60 seconds ]

- - - while this can disorient a victim due to the length of time it can be held the victim will not experience any physical harm. this power functions for the most part as a distraction or a disorientation tactic. while the panic brought on by this power might hinder movements, it's still very easy to move under the influence of this power and the victim can easily shake the user.

for the user :
// using the power for it's maximum amount of time causes slight dizziness and shortness of breath. this will last about 30 seconds.
// exceeding the maximum by 10 seconds causes severe dizziness and disorientation, causing the user to stumble frequently if they attempt to walk. this will last about 30 seconds.
// exceeding the maximum by 20 seconds causes the user to be unable to stand. this will last about 30 seconds.
// exceeding the maximum by 30 seconds will cause the user to pass out for a short period, and exceeding by 60 causes death. fainting will last about 60 seconds, death is obviously permanent.

[ LVL 2 ]
+ + + while in direct contact, user can now cause another person hyperventilate and cause severe anxiety. this can last as long as the user can hold their breath without the drawbacks of the power causing them physical harm [ up to 90 seconds ]. if this goes on long enough the victim might be severely dizzy and disoriented or even pass out.

- - - while it will make moving difficult, victims can still move somewhat while under the influence of this power. victims have the best chance breaking free if they start struggling right from the beginning. as physical contact needs to be maintained, if victims can shove the user away the user's influence is broken and the victim is released.

for the user :
// using the power for it's maximum amount of time causes severe dizziness, headaches, and nausea, along with disorientation. this will last about 30 seconds.
// exceeding the maximum by 10 seconds causes the user to be unable to stand up for more than a few seconds at a time. this will last about 30 seconds.
// exceeding the maximum by 20 seconds causes the user to be unable to stand at all, even for a short period. this will last about 30 seconds.
// exceeding the maximum by 30 seconds will cause the user to pass out for a short period, and exceeding by 60 will cause death. fainting can last about 90 seconds, death is obviously permanent.

[ LVL 3 ]
+ + + the user no longer needs to be in direct contact with the victim. one touch and the victim can be under the influence of the user's power. while under the influence, the victim will hyperventilate and feel as if no matter how much air they take in it won't fill their lungs, feeling much as if they are suffocating or drowning. this causes dizziness, disorientation, and most likely fainting along with severe anxiety and panic. [ maximum 120 seconds ]

- - - even though the user doesn't need direct contact for the duration of the attack, the further away the user is the weaker the effect so the user may still want to keep in constant contact with their victim. while no longer connected to their victim, the user must put a great amount of concentration into their abilities. if that concentration is broken, say if they're knocked over or hit particularly hard, influence is broken instantly and the victim is released.

for the user :
// using the power for it's maximum amount of time causes disorientation, headache, and shortness of breath. this will last around 20 seconds.
// exceeding the maximum by 20 seconds causes the user to stumble frequently when trying to walk, headache, disorientation, and nausea. effects last around 20 seconds.
// exceeding the maximum by 30 seconds causes the user to be unable to stand for more than a few seconds at a time, headache, nausea and vomiting, and disorientation. effects last around 20 seconds.
// exceeding the maximum by 60 seconds will cause the user to pass out for a short period, and exceeding by a minute will cause death. fainting can last about 120 seconds. death is permanent.

[ PARALYZED ]
+ + + allows the user to temporarily paralyze another person, either partially or completely depending on the level; requires skin to skin contact.
after effects on the user and victim will be similar, stiffness and soreness.

- - - the power itself can be incredibly painful to use and the user will experience paralysis in the same location as the victim for the period of use. because of this, the user must be careful not to paralyze any vital parts of the body such as the head, chest, or neck.
even after paralysis is released, the user will experience extended paralysis afterward for varying lengths of time depending on how long they held the paralysis.

[ LVL 1 ]
+ + + while in direct contact, the user can paralyze one limb of the victim. victims will feel numbness and faint painless tingling in the limb and be unable to move it, or only able to move it slightly. they will most likely not be able to support weight on that limb.

- - - as the use of this power only paralyzes one limb, the victim can fight back against the power and theoretically pull themselves away or even attack the user while the power is in use.
the user will be paralyzed for the duration of the attack, and once they release they will remain paralyzed for as long as the victim was. [ if they paralyze someone for one turn, they will be paralyzed for one turn following release as well as being paralyzed with the victim during the attack ]
the use of the power can be very painful for the user, causing full body muscle cramps and spasms.

for the user :
// holding for one turn causes paralysis for one turn after release, and difficulty moving for another turn after that [ 50% dexterity penalty ]
// holding for two turns causes paralysis for two turns after release, and difficulty moving for one turn after that [ 50% dexterity penalty ]
// this pattern continues indefinitely

p e r s o n a l i t y[ witty, sympathetic, bold, equable, sincere // withdrawn, needy, reckless, approval-seeking, defensive ]
The thing that stands out about Oliver when you first meet her is a general air of indifference to her situation.
She’s the kind of person who accepts things as they come, positive or negative, and isn’t likely to make a fuss about it beyond a bit of sarcasm.
She tends to meed most things with a wry wit that can end up off-putting, or even seeming rude.
Her monotonous sarcasm is never meant with ill-intent or bad will, and typically it’s just an attempt to make others laugh, but things can be misunderstood and Oliver never had a way with carefully choosing her words.
Even in the most serious situations, she doesn’t consider what she has to say until it comes out of her mouth.
This, in a way, shows sincerity in her thoughts.
Her words are what she means, even if she has trouble communicating them exactly how they are in her mind. But in general it just means she tries to stay quiet.
Despite being withdrawn when it comes to her own emotions, she's a good listener. When others need affection, she'll offer it. When they need understanding, she can provide.

While she isn’t one to intentionally offend, she’s likely to escalate the situation if someone gets upset with her.
She’s constantly on the defense; ferociously protective of herself against things that aren’t even threats. In the back of her mind, if someone is upset with her it means she’s failed to get their approval.
She fears being left unaccepted, so she pushes back to make them feel just as unaccepted as she does.

There’s a desperate need for approval that sits deep in her gut, and it’s a facet of herself she doesn’t like to come face to face with.
Oliver believes that this part of herself is in control and safely tucked away from public eye but when analyzing her behavior it becomes very evident where that part of herself bleeds through.
It’s not unlike her to take dangerous risks on another’s behalf partially out of seeking their approval or appreciation.
Even her love of making others laugh can stem from a longing for that attention. Beyond a simple desire for approval, she’s needy.
She doesn’t express it, even with people she trusts deeply, but there’s an aching longing in her chest for affection she often pushes away.
A fear of emotional vulnerability looms over her head, even if it’s something she craves, and when finding herself in places that call for that vulnerability she lashes out.
Her sympathetic nature comes as a double-edged sword in this.
If someone expresses emotions that hit too close to home for her, she tends to become uncomfortable or closed off and sometimes snaps at someone seeking comfort.h i s t o r y

[ tl;dr // Oliver gets Depression but she's trying to fix it ]

You’re not going to find anything spectacular when you look into Oliver’s life.
Sometimes Oliver wished there were something specific she could pin down and blame everything on, but there isn’t.
There’s no dramatic backstory about some sort of tragic villain in her life, there’s no moment where she lost everything, there’s no key player in her life other than herself.
Just herself.

She was the only child of parents who weren’t interested in parenting.
They took good care of her, they weren’t bad parents, they weren’t maliciously neglectful. Just absent.
As long as she was quiet and well-behaved, they didn’t care.
During her childhood it was normal that they weren’t really a part of her life, though as she got older she slowly realized how isolating it was.

They lived in their own universe and Oliver lived in hers. It wasn’t the worst life imaginable, it wasn’t bad at all really.

It was just lonely.

At 14 she joined her school’s swim team and it was the first time she felt interesting.
It was the first time she was excited about anything.
She made friends on the swim team. She held the record for the longest any of them could hold their breath at two minutes and thirty seconds.
She wasn’t remarkably good or remarkably bad at swimming, she settled firmly in the middle, but she loved it anyway.

At 16 she had her first panic attack. It wasn’t a moment of spectacular stress, it wasn’t some dramatic moment.
She was laying in bed, staring at the ceiling when it started.
It felt like she was suffocating, it felt like she couldn’t breathe, she felt sick, she felt panicked, she felt like she wasn’t real.
She felt like she was going to die. Even after it stopped, she kept shaking. Nothing could really calm her down even though the wave of panic had subsided.

At 17 her panic attacks get more frequent, and a hopelessness that’s always been there deep in her gut begins to grow and spread and strangle her from the inside.
Swimming just felt like a waste of energy. A waste of what little motivation she had. She quit the team. It was a struggle to keep her grades decent.

At 18 she’d lost touch with most of her friends on the swim team. By the time she enrolled in college, she’d lost touch with all of them.
When she considered living alone, she didn’t think it’d be any worse than living with a family that didn’t talk to her. Somehow it was lonelier.

At 19 there were times when she’d have at least one panic attack a week. There were days when she had to force herself out of bed and it was hard to bring herself to shower or brush her teeth.
By the time she finished her second semester in her second year, she got a roommate named Max. Max helped a lot, having a roommate made her feel less lonely.
It pushed her to keep her room clean, to do dishes, to take care of herself better.
By her last semester she started therapy at Max’s suggestion.
She was diagnosed with anxiety and depression, to nobody’s surprise. At the end of her second year, Oliver seemed like she was getting better.

At 20, her anxiety got worse, and that made her depression worse.
The snake consumed it’s own tail, every wave of anxiety made her feel more hopeless, and the hopelessness made her feel more anxious.
The panic attacks, the anxiety attacks, the drops were getting worse and she was only a semester in.
It wasn’t unusual for her to think about suicide as an abstract concept.
She’d probably had thoughts like that as long as she could remember, and in hindsight it made her wonder if someone could be born depressed,
but two semesters in and it felt less like an abstract concept and more like a plan.
Three semesters in and she started medication for the first time.
At the end of the year, she starts swimming again. It felt like being able to breathe again when she was in the water.

At 21 she decided to take that year off of college. It helped the anxiety, it worsened the depression.
Her life feels like a balancing act between the anxiety brought on by schoolwork, the depressive spiral brought on by not doing anything, and her medication as some kind of balance bar.
She takes a job to try and help with the depressive spiral and it worsens her anxiety, she takes time off to help with her anxiety and she can feel a drop creeping up on her.
It feels like juggling chainsaws, except instead of fear the sound of the roaring motors just brings on exhaustion and a quiet acceptance.

At 2:45 pm, her phone buzzes.

The demon race has recently lost their king. The war over which group should hold power over the world of the supernatural has been placed into action.
As humans, you have been given the honor to make something of your short and pointless existence.
Rise to the task of which you have been given and achieve great power and honor.
If you do not forward this to at least ten other people the demons will come and claim you…

"I hate chain mail."

Nancy -- can I call you nancy? -- i have to level with you. If we start this thing, It's going to be for the long term. I'm going to need to rely on you, nancy. I'm going to entrust so much of myself with you, invest so much time and emotional energy into this relationship. I need you to stand by me, nancy. You're reaching out while I'm emotionally vulnerable and I need you to know what you're getting into.
I need to know you're here for me, Nancy, and I don't know if you really mean this.
Do you really want to talk, or do you just want me to listen? Do you really want to share pictures, symbolic pieces of ourselves, with each other? Or do you just want to look at them?
Am I just something in passing?
You say it's "nice seeing me here" as if we've met before, as if you know me, nancy. But do you really know me, nancy? Do you know what I need, do you know what keeps me up at night? Do you know my deepest fears, my goals, my dreams? Do you know my favorite color? It's yellow, nancy. It's yellow. But would you have known that about me if I hadn't told you? Would you have cared to ask? Would you have spent the time to learn that about me?
Nancy, level with me, would you have spent time with me, learning what makes me laugh and what breaks my heart? Would you watch anime with me at 2 am, Nancy? Would you read my favorite book or watch my favorite movie just to touch a part of me? Just to put together my pieces?
That's what I need right now, and I don't think you'd be the one to provide it.
