Flutter stood before the cave. She wasn't sure of what drew her here. It was like something was calling her. Carefully she entered the cave. As she walked, the natural formations soon gave way to smooth carved walls, and then a metal corridor. She came upon a room filled with monitor screens, her eyes drawn to the largest one that dominated the room.
"Welcome Flutter. I have been waiting for you."
She jumped at the metallic voice as it spoke out.
"Who are you? Where are you?" She asked looking around.
"My name is Monitor. And I am all around you."

"What do you want from me?" Flit asked.
"Deep down, you are conflicted." Monitor said. "You were born an experiment, and you sometimes wonder what your life means."
The giant screen switched on, and Monitor continued.
"Be thankful for what you have and who you are. You're life could have turned out very different..."

Flutter watched the screen. She saw herself, and her friends Toxic and Scrape, but something was wrong. They were wearing the uniforms of their father, Dr Eggman, and they rode in tanks at the head of a vast army.
"What is this?" Flutter asked. "This never happened."
"It has but it hasn't." Monitor replied. "This world was created by a decision you made. The decision to leave your creator vs the decision to remain with him. For every choice that is made, a new universe is born. In this world, you and your friends remained with the doctor, and now lead his armies in battle."

"So you are saying that this world came about through a choice I did or didn't make?" Flit asked.
"Yes..."
The screen changed. This time, Flit saw another version of himself. Half of his face was covered in bionics, and his right arm had been replaced. His wings were sheathed in metal that gave them razor sharp edges.
"What is this?" He asked Monitor.
"This is a world where the Dark Legion rule. 98% of the population has been enslaved and legionized."

Flutter shook her head. The screen changed again and she saw herself in a small cozy cottage. A beautiful baby was cradled in her arms, it's wings a mosaic of brilliant oranges framed with the deepest blacks.
"I... I have a baby?" She gasped.
"In this world. Not long after you were created, a great peace was achieved. You grew without knowing what war was."

The screen changed once more. Flit saw himself in another world. Before he could ask, another picture appeared, and then another, and another, and another...

"How many worlds are there?" Flutter asked amazed.
"They are infinite, and growing. Every person, every choice, every variable creates a new one." Monitor said.
"Am I the real Flutter?"
"Yes. And No. You are who you are. This is your world. This is your life."
Flutter shook her head again. This was too much to take in. She looked at the screen. It showed a male butterfly with red and purple wings. He seemed to be looking straight at her. She watched as he reached out. Without thinking she mimicked his movements, reaching for her own screen.

Flit touched the screen. The female butterfly, his feminine self copied as though she could see him. Their hands 'touched' for a moment, and then the screen went black. Flit waited, but nothing else happened.
"Monitor?" He asked.
There was no reply. Flits head spun with what he had seen. It gave him a new outlook on life. There were after all, worse things than this world apparently. Once back outside the cave, he took off, his wings carrying him along swiftly. He couldn't wait to tell his friends, Hazard the Hedgehog and Graze the Wolf what he had seen...
