“So it’s like that Jim Carrey movie? You’re just live streaming the whole ‘investigation’ as it happens?”

Adrianne Olson did her best to maintain a supportive expression as she put down a worn bicycle helmet with a handy-cam garishly duct taped to it-an earlier prototype of her friend’s investigative streaming endeavors. The friend in question stood before her, beaming.

Ashley Hamrick straightened the collar of her leather jacket-the new microcam carefully threaded into it and wired to her phone.

“This bitch is streaming straight to Instagram, YouTube, and Twitch-say hi to your adoring fans, Adrianne!” She turned the phone to her friend, the latter’s sour face filling the screen on the livestream.

As was her usual cold reception to Ashley’s snoop broadcasting, Adrianne gave a skeptic smirk.

“Please leave me out of this. I’m not becoming an e-girl.”The girl jokingly/half not jokingly remarked as the usual slew of obnoxious stream comments poured in.

Adrianne winced-yet couldn’t tear her eyes away from the train wreck.

“Ashley-let me add to that. Please, never make me read a phrase quite as horrifying as ‘Ring-a-ding-ding, bring those toes over here, mommy’ ever again.”

Adrianne handed the phone back over with a an expression of shell shock glazed over her. The chipper blonde paused the stream and placed the device into her jacket pocket.

“C’mon, Addz, lighten up! Do you realize how much easier things are going to be for ‘Ashley Investigates’ going hands free? How much less conspicuous I’ll be with the hidden body cam?”

“Fair,” Adrianne shot a glance to the helmet with the camera taped to it, “I suppose it’ll be a lot more convincing to smugglers and money launderers that you’re there on official business without that strapped to your head.”

“Have you ever actually seen a health inspector? You can’t prove the helmet cam isn’t standard attire. Those guys at the dock were going with it completely!”

“They had you tied up and thrown into a shipping container two minutes later, Ash. All it took was one guy who wasn’t too busy working to realize that there were no grills for you to inspect at a warehouse.”

“Sounds to me like another flawless infiltration!” Ashley stood upright and turned toward the door of the apartment. “I hope the world is ready for round two. We’re going live over at LlamaTech’s pharmaceutical lab at 11 tonight. You joining me and Mad at the gate?”

Adrianne pinched her forehead-a common occurrence every time her friend enthusiastically mentioned breaking-and-entering at her employer’s office.

“You know the answer to that one. Please, Ash, don’t d-

“Great, thanks! Hope you don’t mind that I’m borrowing your ID card for the night-I’ll leave it on your nightstand when we get back!”

The last part of the snoop’s words came from outside as she slinked through the door before any protest could be made.

It was a miracle Adrianne was still employed.

“Awww, c’mon sweetheart. Judging by the traffic you’re getting, I can make a pretty good guess as to why people stay subscribed.”

It had turned into one of those nights. Madeline had to back out because of a last-minute showing at the gallery, so Ashley decided better to go it alone than cancel the livestream. Camera running, @AshleyInvestigates chose to continue its exposé on the activities LlamTech’s darker narcotics research-everything from rage inducing steroids to military grade tranquilizers. Not your standard CVS fare.

This chain of events lead to her current predicament-bound, gagged, her microcamera ripped out of her collar, and her phone-along with the stream-now hijacked by LlamTech’s less than savory night security.

“GVVVHHH THHHHT BHHHK!”

“Give you the phone back?” The grizzly man and his partner chuckled as they kept the camera fixated on their prey. “You’re the one trespassing, remember? You’re lucky we don’t book you right now!”

Rolling her eyes, Ashley say her head back against the wall in resignation.

“What the hell are all these comments about feet pics?” The other guard remarked as he took a glance at the stream-lifting an eyebrow at the girl. “This one of those streams?”

“NNHHH HHSHHHH NHHHHH!”

The guards’ eyes widened.

It was no use. This was how the night was going to go. The two men stepped closer, reaching for her sneakers-somehow making Ashley wish it was one of those death trap evenings rather than this. Anything but this.
