Description
Hmmm... I almost decided not to upload this one, but why not eh?I normally don't do close up work, because nothing shows flaws in 3D work like closeups. However, I have always been inspired the life like renders over at the cgisociety website.
This piece was my first real attempt at designing skin shaders for Povray that have a more realistic look. I don't think I am there yet, but I am tired of working on this one. I'll get back to it sometime in the future.

If you find one of my sigs, you can read more about it on my mini--faq. Basically, I use 3DSMax, Wings3D, Povray, Poser, Poseray, Megapov, and Photoshop. *phew* That's a mouthful.

I really like this. The eyes are really nice, even though they are a bit big. The nose is a little offish, but its still a really good piece of art.

Nice, but if you got problems with the skin try an red/orange tone in a falloff curve in the translucency slot in the shader and since its a closeup it be intressting to see how it wold look with depth of field to harmonise with the blurry background.- if you can stand the renderingtime.
Oh and if you really dont mind rendertime then try to add a photrometric light or areashadows to soften the hard hair shadow on her neck.
Otherwise its a good image as it is just wanted to add some tips (man sound like an old preacher).

This looks like an image you might see on the front of a Art of Maya book. It's very well done. Being that I am trying to learn how to use software like that, I've got to know if you modeled that from scratch and what software(s) you used.

I don't model from scratch unless I have to. In this case, this is the Aiko 3 model is from DAZ with some custom morph targets applied. When I do model, it is usually figures or items to support the scene. I don't do characters from scratch. I use 3DSMax for the modeling work I've done. Someday, I should get around to learning Maya.
In this scene, the focus was work on the shader nodes for the PovRay render engine.

I was going to ask you what you rendered in that gave it such a solid and realistic quality - I've got POV-RAY and Pose-Ray downloaded, but I haven't tried them yet. Are they difficult to work with?

I was also going to say that if you are serious, you are not alone out there. Parrotdolphin also uses povray for render work. she is a great resource when it comes to helping with textures.

I also want to try close up one of these days, but as you said, that will show most of the imperfections from poser models that we try to hide so hard - especially when I render with poser itself. This is probably where the "Uncanny Valley" phenomenon plays against us.

That was the reason why "Final Fantasy: Spirits Within" failed to profit when it was so impressive in the visuals. I loved the movie because computer graphics was my major in college, so I never tried to imagine the CG characters as "real people" because I know exactly what they are made of. The "Uncanny Valley" has no effect over me, but it does seem to affect everybody else. When I saw your close up render, that's the 1st thing that came to my mind.

I think maybe people are focusing on the eyes because you usually don't see such a realistic anime character. They are, almost by definition, toony.
I like it. She definitely does not look human but then, she's not supposed to!

What I don't understand is why the bumpmap on the skin seems to be a flaw. I mean skin DOES look a little rough when you look closely.
Except maybe you rather want something like a perfect skin for an elf.
Anyways:

At this range, one should be able small lines in the skin. The slightly bumpy/rough is not quite adequate enough to fool the human eye into thinking it might be real. Instead, it looks more like a doll or toy. It is amazing how unforgiving the human eye is.

I love the face shape and realistic texture you used. Interesting shadows on the face. Povray handles shadows much better than poser for sure. interesting reflections on her eyes

Lokai2000 In reply to AreeElf [2007-01-12 16:17:03 +0000 UTC]
It may handle shadows better, but at the cost of *significantly* longer render times.
One of the things that is killing me is that I can't get refraction to work correctly for the eyes. This is because the cornea is infinitely thin and povray won't calculate things the way I want. I think I am going to have to create my own eye models.... (bleh!)
She is supposed to have an anime/doll like appearance. I'm surprised how many people have been complaining about the eyes being to large.....

AreeElf In reply to Lokai2000 [2007-01-12 16:50:42 +0000 UTC]
I find Shade really does handle shadows really well and provided I just wish I had more HDRI images for environment reflections.
What refraction index are you using for the cornea? I've been using using 1.5 and 2.5 if i really want large anime look.
I wonder how hard it is to create eye models I want one with a concave iris. I hae blackeyes and real eyes 1.5 sometimes.

Lokai2000 In reply to AreeElf [2007-01-12 23:13:38 +0000 UTC]
I wanted to use and ior of 1.5, but I have tried up to 7.5 without any effect whatsoever..... *sigh*
I would, most likely, just modify the DAZ eye models to give some thickness to the cornea. This wouldn't be to hard in 3DSMax.

I love the picture and you will reach the CGSociety standard goal but its still a little off. I can see that the bump map is wrong, somehow but thats my only complaint. Even though it looks a little peculiar, I love the reflection in her eyes. Very nice job and keep at it with new models, even if you do put this one on the back burner for a while.

Lokai2000 In reply to Hather [2007-01-12 16:14:09 +0000 UTC]
I agree, the bump mapping for the skin has been driving nuts. I need to rethink my approach. The sky is full of galaxy like star clusters. That is why the eyes have the strange "sparkle" reflections. I liked the effect myself.

Pretty good! The eye iris colors are fantastic! Doing realism on non-human types is devilishly hard to do, because we are all hardwired to spot flaws. It's a genetic imperative to weed out flaws, or unwanted genetic traits in human gene-pool.
In 3d work, since it has some appearance of reality, it triggers and pulls us out of artistic stylistics, and flags it with a warning. The bar is almost impossibly high in human realism, but once you hit it--dude, you have arrived!
