Description
I needed a "low" poly model for generating the test scenes for the latest release of PIBL. So I threw this little scene together.I didn't have Asuka in mind when I made this, but somehow she ended up looking like her....
For those who are wondering what PIBL is.

You might want to stop by Daz3d.com. they have a free tool suite called Daz|Studio that might be a good place to get started.
Personally, I used a whole slew of tools: 3DSMax, Wings3D, Poser, Poseray, PIBL/IBX, Povray/MegaPov, Photoshop. I don't think I forgot anything...

Oh wow... It can take a looong time.
In fact, most people wouldn't tolerate the render times these pieces take, but then I come from an era where computers took a long time to do anything. I still remember when a first generation SGI machine took 30 minutes to render a torus.

Nice reflections. I like your IBL results better than Poser's.

LOL! Look cutey - i remember that i was interested in your IBL thingy... but then i got distracted and now i don't remember anymore what it does! LOL! (weird... i'm usually *so* focused... ) - looks like i'll have to go and refresh my memory!

Amazing how AnimeDoll is not only lowpoly (in comparison to other figures) but she's also a looker!
I was wondering if you need a reference image to be able to use IBL in either Poser or PovRay?

To use IBL in poser you do need a reference image. Poser's particualr you need the image like it's reflection in a ball. I know other progarams can use any imge for IBL

Hmm, I could create such images on 3DSMAX and use UV unwrap to create a baked texture. My doubt is if Poser needs any special kind of file format for the light probe image, or can it be just about any files, like BMP or JPEG? The manual says nothing about that. I could also create panoramic images (360 degree photographs), but I am not sure if the lighting would be consistent, because those images are made by shooting photos in multiple directions with a digital camera and then stitching them all together in one piece. The prob is that digital cameras try to automatically adjust to lighting conditions and that compromises the whole in the end.

Which brings me to the question: why isn't that in the Poser manual??

Because they want you to buy the advanced book, lol
Don't even get me started on the lack of support on Shade and how bad that manual is.

If you are talking about Shade 8, I am very curious if it got any better than that clumsy GUI from version 7. I mean, Shade7 was unusable with all that confusing interface with endless menu browsings. Did it get any better with v8?

The GUI's still bad though a bit improved from version 7 if I remember right. There's more menu options. Barely used 7 so don't quite fully remember it

In the 3D graphics magazines I read, Shade is still considered the most "confusing" 3D package out there. I always thought Caligari TrueSpace was the king of confusing GUIs, but I think Shade got the golden crown for that now... unless they completely redone it in version 8.

Hmm... define reference image.
I think the answer is yes. All IBL lighting treats a source (reference?) image as though it is a "stained glass" window to shine light through. I most (if not all) cases, the window is a sphere surrounding some center point.
I'm not a big fan of poser6's IBL lighting. It has the unfortunate quality that it just obliterates all shadows in a scene. (of course, I might just be using it wrong. )

By ref image I mean a separate bitmap that IBL uses to compute the scene lighting. I don't know how to create those images and I didn't find references on how to do that part. -_-

I'm not sure what Poser uses. A lot of programs require HDRI "probe" files. These can be a little hard to come by and require special equipment and software to produce.
The program I wrote just uses any old BMP file as a reference image. (well... 24 bit uncompressed BMP's). This was one of the motivators for writing my own IBL generator as the HDRI function in poseray also requires the probe files.

Poser6 "Diffuse IBL" seems to be able to attach *anything* as a ref image (probe light), to include shader nodes or a simple JPEG file. The manual also seems to claim it like that. As a matter of fact, I didn't find any inputs for HDRI files there. The manual also claims that you must activate AO (ambient occlusion) and raytraced shadows in conjunction with IBL lighting (and respective ref image) if you want shadows to work with it. ^^

Ahhhh. perhaps that is why I couldn't get shadows to work.
Better not have a very complex scene.
Firefly can't even deal with the regular stuff so well.

I read somewhere that FireFly is an adaptation of Pixar's Renderman engine, which was meant exclusively for organic shapes. A major flaw with that is the fact that Poser layers multiple geometries one other the other when a character is clothed. Renderman deforms the geometries to smooth them out in a rather exaggerated way, often causing the geometry layers to overlap and pokethru.
In addition, both P4 and FF renderers can't resolve shadows in scenes with large surfaces, such as background buildings, floor, or walls. That's an old Poser rendering problem that has never been solved. If you load a large background to render with your characters, shadows simply won't render correctly anymore. For that I use Vue. ^^
