Well... I got the motion blur thing figured out. I've been trying to do the cone of feathers Hellwolve requested, but.... I give up... Every time I try to bring the feathers in at the base it looks like the feathers are attacking the character in the center. I also tried to make them metal, but that didn't look so good either.The feathers are in an alternate flow here, I think I like the original better though.
I also added some bricks flying around in the background. Oh well, the work continues....

Looks quite impressive, regardless of the shortcomings you've noted Now, the metal bit: I've no idea what you've tried, but have you tried actual corroded/corrupted, dark metal for the texture and a less detailed feather? Perhaps that'll do the trick
Now, the shape...The individual feathers look to point at the character. Have you tried to get them to turn 90 degrees, so they rotate around her? Perhaps that'll diminish the "They're attacking!" effect you've noticed

Rotating the feathers actually makes the problem worse....
I tried all kinds of things, but the common theme was as the feathers moved closer it always looked like the center figure was being devoured. It just seems that there needs to be some space between the character and the debris field to give a since of presence.
I have not given up on the metal feathers just yet. One of the problems with this scene is that there is anthing for them to reflect. So they end up looking really flat.

Just tweak some more 'til you get something good; as long as the idea stays the same, I'm fine with it
And, the metal feathers...Well, I suppose we'll have to make something to reflect sometime soon
Speaking of stuff that'll be done soon, I've tweaked Raine somewhat; I'll send you a render or two ASAP

Yeah I think it is time to start working with a real character. I need to get some free tim to send you what would be useful for me. If you could do the first stage conversion through Poseray and send me those files, that would be great. Then I could start working on the materials and I would not have to have the models installed that you use.

Comic pages that use this kind of element the most would be Japanese manga, I'd suggest you study some of those to see how they arrange and apply blurs to make their effects look right. Most likely it's some very basic trick you need and you'll be right where you want to be.
