For me this image evokes a feeling of being lost or lonely.
Finding oneself in the :

Tranquil yet haunting shadows of the night...
An internal struggle between the dark and the light.
A silent stillness, penetrating....sit and stare
The smell of rain lingering in the air,
A touch of dampness on the skin,
A taste of bitterness within...
At last there is hope in sight,
Bright lights streaming on the horizon.
A promise to come forth and be enlighten...

So there is my poetic tale...hope you enjoy dear W...xyz.

True, but I try really hard to keep my wild imagination at least R rated.

This makes me think of a mental institute (I am tired, ok, I become weird when I'm tired)..

I see a girl, having been unjustly institutalized and having escaped by some miraculous chance, running along the road, trying to keep to the shadows, but at the same time can't bare the thought of leaving the light. She seeks safety, but all she feels is the cold, cold harsness of the night and the sting of the sharp survice of the road under her bare feet. However, even that is pleasant to her, she feels, she's alive..the taste of a free life has never been so sweet. The sight of the oncoming lights frightens her, she can't be caught, can't be taken back to that place..she can still smell the horrible stench of it..the atmoshphere of it threatening to engulf her mind. The thought of such horror pushes her forward, she has no other way, she is trapped, there is only forward..

I love this! That's my first thought when I saw this image (even from the thumbnail).
I don't think I can come up with a story at this hour late at night, but I'm going to try my best.(not to blabber)
The '50s, the night engulfs the narrow street as our last hope walks away, leaving only a faint mark on the muddy driveway. The darkness is dangerous? Or the light from the bottom of the darkness? Some things are not as we imagine them. We want to believe stories that are not true, maybe searching for an answer.
And this is how it ends. It isn't really a story, more of an analysis of the image through another person's eyes.

Definitely has potential for a deep mystery novel! Strangely enough i also saw this playing off late 40-50's. Thank you for sharing your wonderful imagination - not flattery, I've seen what you are capable of.

My tale ended rather quickly in tragedy as they always do but i like the idea of doing a series although my town is pretty mundane and boring so will have to really search....thinking that perhaps that could be the end shot and now tell the story of how it came to pass..... see what you did now , you go me brain working overtime!

DianaGrigore In reply to lomatic [2013-04-23 21:38:13 +0000 UTC]

Well, it's good for the brain, isn't it! And I'm thinking there's more ambition to it if your town is mundane and boring, in that way you can really transform the boredom into something to your own liking!

I'm thinking of some kind of horror where some teens are driving along and their car breaks down just before nightfall. They don't have much technology, either don't have phones or can't get a signal, so one of them decides to walk down the road in search of help, while the other (let's say 3) stay by the car. As the first one (let's call him John) is walking down the road he sees a strange facility to the right of the road. With the sun setting fast he decides to see who's there. As John treks down the long driveway he begins to notice scraps of metal and bones lying along side the road. He presses on, become more and more suspicios of what the facility is, as the sun as well and truly gone down and the overhead lights show him the way. Eventually he loses his nerve and decided to head back. He walks fast, breathing heavily now. He regrets not bringing a jacket as the night is cold and he feels a few faint drops of rain. John is suddenly struck by the thought that something is very, very wrong. He starts to run. Faster and faster he sprints down the desolate driveway, glancing behind him every so often, but running all the while. THe rain is heavy now, it soaks through his clothes and seems to chill him to the bone. Spriniting as fast as he can he slips in a puddle and falls. John goes tumbling down the road. His body feels numb and there is a stream of blood running down his face from a deep gash on his left forehead. To his left he sees a mishapen skull glaring at him. He reaches out in horror, smearing it with blood form his fall.

John is panicking now. He drags himself to his feet and throws himself forwards. He hurries as fast as he can down the road, stumbling all the way on his increasingly swollen ankle form the fall. He runs for what seems like hours, desperately trying to reach the road. He loses track of everything... Everything but the darkness, and the rain. He's reached his limit.

John collapses, exhausted, to the road. Head swimming, hunched over, he drags himself forwards on his hands and knees. Then he sees it. The misshapen skull, still glaring. The smear of blood is still there. Despite the wind and the rain his blood remains on that skull. It still stares at him, seeming almost to laugh at his pathetic state. Terrified and exhausted he looks up at the driveway in front of him. What he sees is a long gravel road, surrounded by pillars of wraught iron. He thinks there might be a bridge in the near distance, but he can't be sure. Slowly, cautiosly, John turns his head to see behind him. What he beholds is more horrible, more utterly terrifying then anything he has ever seen.

It is a road. The same road, with the same details, lined by the same iron pillars. Once again, he thinks there might be a bridge in the distance, but he can't be sure. Even though he has run from that direction, he can't be sure. The flourescent lights overhead beign to flicker. The chilling wind seems to bite through him, althought eh rain has stopped. It leaves only a few faint puddles behind. Kneeling in the middle of that road, devoid of all hope, with raindrops and tears still rolling down his cheeks, John died. He watched with a morbid fascination as headlights came over the hill in front of him. the flourescent lights overhead flickered, dimmed and went out, then all was dark.

John's friends, meanwhile, had fixed their car, and driven down the road in search of him. Theay driven up and down a stretch of the road, twice, unable to find him. Night had fallen when they decided to turn up a driveway on the side of the road. They had driven for only a minute or two when they came over a crest heard a sickening thump against the front of the car before sliding to halt.

They had found John.
