Description
I've felt like this a bit lately….Based on a magazine illustration I did recently… changed it a bit and then painted in a bunch of stuff from my desk. Ignore the wildy inaccurate perspective work… it looked quirky and charming in my original sketch but now its starting to bother me...
Things to know.
• this is about the 7th or 8th time I've painted the plastic skull on my desk… and yes, I have a plastic skull on my desk.
• no, that isn't really me…. I have a goatee and don't dribble as much when I drink.
• painting multiple drinking cans is less fun than you might think.
• dinosaurs on the other hand are awesome!
Pencil sketch, painted in photoshop.

Great stuff. Does the skull have a name and do you talk to him or her?

"Mr Skull". Not particularly imaginative, but rather apt I think.
He's not much of a conversationalist, so our talks are short and one sided

Shure he has!
But the picture itself is as funny as well drawn! I really like the small but wonderful details which you always packs into your work.
Little hint: energy drinks pushs you up, yes. Because they are full of sugar! That's the whole secret. No mysterious things like a plant from the jungle or so. No, just about 30 sugar cubes per litre!

Thanks! Picked him up at a toystore and I've been wanting to paint him for ages. I have a herd of schleich cows on the shelf above my computer too, but that would have taken way too long to paint

Thanks. I used to end up with cold left over pizza... probably no less lethal than the old sardine sandwich and still not as fun as dinosaurs!

When you do these "Fun" projects, do they take a long time? Do you break them up over a few days or do you sit for 15 straight hours until your finished?
Just a professional Curiosity.

This particular piece is a little different in that it is an extrapolation of a magazine illustration I did recently, which contained the figure, chair, desk and monitor and some other stuff that I took out for this particular purpose.
I then painted the other stuff as the 'fun' part of the project. But yes, fun projects usually take a while... if I added both lots of time together it would be about 25-35 hours all up which means it has to be broken up over a number of days anyway
Cheers!

Thank you so much for your reply. I've recently been transitioning to digital painting and I'm just curious how long I should be spending to gauge realistic deadlines. You're advice is most excellent.

Honestly, the perspective didn't bother me a bit. I think the angles work with the fun playful mage itself. Plus, the angle of the left side of the desk mirroring the angle of the right shoe is very nice and really makes it feel grounded if that makes sense. I like when a tangent like that actually works and forces the viewer's eyes around the piece. It's brilliant!

Loopydave In reply to Hobbit1978 [2013-05-23 08:05:56 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! I was playing a little loose with the perspective to make it more fun... I guess the only bit that really bothers me is it feels like the guys back leg is too short... or running off a slightly different vanishing point to the desk.
Appreciate your feedback and taking the time to comment! Cheers Jeremy!

I'm surprised that you only have only one monitor. Is that something you prefer having or just haven't gone to the trouble of getting another yet?

My laptop will only run one exterior monitor... but its a honking great 30" one, so thats (mostly) enough. I also use the laptop monitor, but its only a 13" so its not particularly useful. I do have another computer that I run my music, email and play DVD's through.. and that helps
