So kilala97 and I came across the concept of "gemlings" here: sallychanscraps.tumblr.com/pos… (Thanks mrtacomam !) Essentially, "gemlings" are infant clones of their original parents that happen when the parent gems touch their gemstones together in a moment of intimacy. You can see Kilala's take on how awkwardly that would go between future Larimar and Onyx here:

. Obviously this isn't canon (and not supported by the show), just a bit of dumb fandom what-if fun. Set in the future, with older Onyx and Larimar. Sooo here we have:
1.) Larimar and Onyx's..."children". Gemling clone babs. I've been calling them "Oni" and "Lari" to help distinguish them from their parents. Lari-babbu is playful like a puppy and tends to bully Oni-babbu (trying to establish dominance in their little litter hierarchy thing)
2.) Onyx telling her little bab blatant lies a bedtime story. I feel like Onyx and Larimar would kinda be terrible parents, at least initially
3.) "Larimama" dealing with her annoying yappy bitey babbu. Larimar is inadvertently getting a taste of how annoying and bitey she herself used to be
4.) Larimar defends her helpless doofy offspring. Took a biiiit of artistic leeway here and gave Larimar a second row of teeth, like a shark...and retractable claws i guess
do not mess with Larimama's babbus that is a very bad idea
5.) Onyx murderates the hell out of something that was apparently messing with her little Lari-pup. Maybe they're finally getting the hang of this parenting thing.

the Scenario for #4 i think goes like this
Larimar is carring her other gemling like in #3 when a dog start yapping and growling at them this scares the gemling so larimar sits her down and returns the verbal with gusto

Actually I believe it to be very possible in the SU Universe. The show actually gives you everything you need to give gems, children. Not talking about what Steven is.
We know how the gems are made in the show. Basically a machine injects a formula or seed into the ground. Then this seed fuses/absorbs the surrounding material needed to grow the gem. The machine also uses surounding energy and nutrients to accelerate the growth of the new gem. So the show confirmed that they are never babies. Buuut.. it does not say they could not start out as babies. They are accelerated in there growth. Cause growing an army of babies would not aid you in the conquest of the universe.
So, the reality is. It would be completely possible to grow a baby gem. Based on what the show has given you and your own characters. Onix to be exact. Being a big nerd rock and techi. I am sure she would have all the knowledge of how the kindergartens work. So out of desire and love for Larimar. She would figure out a way for them to both create a baby. I mean I believe that living on earth long enough. Gave them the idea to want a baby. Much like Greg and Rose. So she makes a...umm... baby maker.
So how does it work. Well, first they need a seed. Not just any seed. After all they are trying to make a baby that is made up of both of them. Like human babies. How this is done is with a very micro sized sliver of each of there gems. This is not like the gem mutants. Instead the two slivers are ground into a powder an reformed into a seed along with other materials needed. Then it is placed in the machine (we will call it the Incubator) and given specific minerals and energy to stimulate growth. The process takes about a month. It takes longer then the kindergarten cause it is not forcing specific materials to form a specific gem. This process takes a more natural coarse. And thus a baby gem is born.
Not over yet, how does she grow into an adult then. Well her gem is new. It's tiny in fact and still growing. Life has awakened in the gem and it takes on a very rudimentary form. The gem being made from both parent gems. Would instinctively, from latent memory, take on a form similar to their forms. Though the gem is still growing. So for (a yet undetermined amount of time) the baby/child would undergo treatment in a growth chamber once a day for a few hours. Kinda like sleeping. It would provide the minerals and nutrients needed for the gem to grow. Until it reaches it's full shape.
The baby gems would be fragile as well. Being so small and undeveloped. The first form they take (the baby form) would be small as well. It would also be their only form for a while. Since their gem lacked enough energy to allow them to change. In fact any physical damage made to their bodies would be a huge strain on the energy used to maintain it. If they poofed. They would have to spend days or even weeks in the incubator to recharge.
So ya, that is how I could see your babies being brought into this world via cannon knowledge.
Also I am not a scientist or specialist on how gems are made in real life. So if anyone finds a flaw in my cartoon based logic on how to make baby gems from to alien sentient space gems. Fell free to chime in. Just no hate please. You'll wake the babies if you do.
