Description The Tree of Life.

I get mostly inspired by the Greek myth of Gaïa, Mother Earth both a giver and a sustainer of life and by the norse myth of Ygdrasyl the Tree of Life.
Then I created a mix between both.

I also wished to include our planet which is also a wonderful symbol of earth and of life.

It's in watercolor on hot-pressed Arches watercolor paper.

I tried a new technique I read in a book lately, which consists in applying a very light and thin color glaze to the overall painting at the end to give a sense of unity and harmony.
I glazed the whole picture with the same purple I used for shadows. I just love purple shades !

I hope you like it !!

Merci encore !!

The technique you used with the purple glazing was quite successful! I love the colors in this piece and you have a great sense for composition! The only thing that could make it more perfect is to add some more details after it is dried - the wet in wet technique makes it look a little blurry at some places - especially the edges. But that's a minor thing. You can be proud of this.

Beautiful work! Love the pose of the lady and the way her dress flows!

May I ask what is the name of the book where you read about that glazing technique? I have never heard of it it sounds very interesting and the result is so beautiful !

Thank you so much !!

The book is "the watercolor Artist's Guide to Exceptional Color" by Jan Hart and it explains more in details the different groups of colors, the color wheel, the different options for a painting ( monochromatic, complementary etc..) and the pigments properties such as the pigments more suited for glazing especially.I found it really useful !

You're welcome I'm happy to help ! Any book you would recommand for watercolor ? (My favorites so far are the ones from Stephanie Law)

Well, it is difficult to recommend anything because I don't know what you would likt to improve in your paintings. I love art of Stephanie and I have both her books, of course, they are great! They have one weak point though, it is very recognizable if an artist used one of Stephanie's tutorials I tried it too, of course but I don't like this work of mine because the influence is too vivid. No, it is not bad and some see no problem here at all. If you are looking for a book of this kind , I would recommend tutorials ( walk-through) books of Linda Ravenscroft.

A book which I would personally recommend to every watercolorist is called 'The Complete Watercolorist's Essential Notebook' by Gordon MacKenzie. Although, he mostly paints landscapes and still life, his book helped me a lot with my art! It is a treasury of many different techniques and advice to beginners and advanced watercolorists. I've got the book throught Amazon.de...

I was trying to give more attention to backgrounds lately , that's why I have a collection of books teaching how to draw landscapes, Terry Harrison has a nice series of tutorial books... but there are many others, well again I don't know if you are intersted..
I also watch Painting& Drawing channel at YouTube if I happen to have time it is like looking over the shoulder of a professional artist, it has helped me a lot!

Silly me!! I hit the reply button before being done .. sorry !!
I have the tutorial book from Terry Harrison as well and I find it very useful especially for sea and skies.
Thanks for the link to the videos on YouTube ! I'll have a look at them.

I'm also trying to focus more on backgrounds lately in order to introduce more elements in my paintings as one of the critics I frequently received was the lack of detail to set the atmosphere and the scene.I really have to improve on drawing characters as well (the faces especially !).. lots of works to be done !

Thank you again for your support Jana I really appreciate it !!

Well I commend you for your use of water color, its not an easy thing to use.

Now there are a lot of great things in this picture, the idea especially, I like. You do a great job with your brush strokes especially on the mushrooms I like them.

I believe the piece is lacking on the detail, perhaps paint larger so you can really show your viewers what the lady's face looks like. Also, Id like to see more darker colors of green and brown on the tree to bring the picture alive.

I mean overall I like it, keep up the good work

Thanks a lot for the comment !!

I'll work up on adding more details to the background and characters in the comming pieces thanks for the advice ! as for the contrast I'm really working on that but it's one of the most difficult and challenging part I think to know exactly how to place shadows and add contrats.. Any tips ?

Anyway thanks a lot for your feedback I really appreciate !!
