Gracie was suddenly filled with something she'd never truly experienced before: fear. White noise filled her head and her chest tightened, like it was suddenly too small for her heart and lungs, who were competing for room as she fought for breath and tried to settle her heartbeat. She had never been touched without permission before, and especially not so roughly. Her tail hurt in a way that she'd only felt when she stubbed her toe on a doorframe or accidentally bumped into a table, and she was certain it would leave a bruise.

She wasn't really sure what overtook her when she leaned back on her haunches, slowly at first, then raising her forelegs more rapidly. As she shoved her golden paws at his chest, she said, her voice fragile yet solid, she let out two words. "Get... OFF!"

As soon as her paws connected with his chest and she felt him move, forced away by her push, she heard a ripping noise. She'd barely even realized he taken her book. She went into autopilot, not even realizing the horror that had made its way onto her face as she snatched up her book, slid it back into her satchel, and ran.

She was supposed to be a princess. Dainty and kind and fighting with her words and above any sort of violence. But she'd gotten physical - she'd shoved him away so thoughtlessly. She felt faint as she tried to find a place to hide away where no one would see the deep, hollow pit in her stomach through her eyes, or how heavy her eyelids suddenly felt, or how hard it was for her to walk as she trudged through her thoughts.

How could she let herself screw up so tremendously?

Who would want a princess like that?

it may seem like gracie is upset over nothing, but to her, she's just done something incredibly wrong, even if coal wasn't even hurt. nobody wants to rescue a princess if she can't even play the part of a damsel, right?
