If Majora's mask is such a powerful, evil thing, why did he have it? How did he have it? And why did the kids inside the moon look like him?

Likely because he was the only one who could contain it. Notice how there were no apocalyptic moon-based disasters when he had the Mask. The children also say very deep things that motivate you to be a better person... Much like the Salesman.
If you take away preconceived notions from the crappy manga, Ben Drowned, and the fantasy cliche bias against wizards and trickster characters, the HMS comes off like the Doctor from Doctor Who. A LOT like the Doctor. With Link in the role of confused new companion.

I just got this game yesterday. I had seem him in videos of the original game and I was so relieved to find he didn't look nearly as creepy now.
I still kinda get a bad feeling he's gonna double- cross me or something though.
