i wonder - when i googled kermis, the wikipedia article had a different definition - sort of seasonal/annual local festival / parade / entertainment. But your photo search comprises mostly photos of amusement parks.
anyway - i hadn't much thought of what it reminds me of - maybe 'the yellow submarine' movie?

A kermis is a (fun)fair or (traveling) carnival. The relevant links between the wiki pages are a bit meager, but that's not uncommon for wikipedia. It is indeed a kind of traveling amusement park, and yes, the rides on those mobiles are all mobile (here's one ready to hit the road, or at least part of it: boxtelnet.nl/pics/2012/brand-k⦠)! A kermis here in Holland (and probably elsewhere) isn't exactly the kind of place where the "intelligentsia" gather btw. They're traditionally associated with fist fights and other nasty stuff due to a combination of beer and the unmet sexual expectations of young males who are already on the edge in many ways.
