well the original ship has the same sphere stuck on the side, so adding the antenna dishes was a natural progression, when it was competed and the final texture added i thought oh no death star but looks very coll so i kept it.

Yeah, it's pretty elegant, and I like more realistic ships in general too. It's fun to think that these things (or at least something similar) might really exist one day.
