The complete title: Lieutenant Commmander Data Joins the March Of RobotMonthly Calender Drawing Prompts / Themes by LuckyLadyXandra on DeviantArt
My first March of Robots drawing prompt for 2021 is an old favorite who i was hesitant to draw because i cant draw anything realistically for beans, And The golden skinned, yellow eyed Android from Star Trek: the Next Generation is not from a 2-d animated world or even a 3-d animated world, which, to me, felt that trying to capture his likeness in the style i use was going to be difficult. Well...it almost looks like him. It looks like him when he first started out all young and fresh faced, sta.sh/017mrulx5hjm but i think the version of Data i remember the most is one where actor, Brent Spinner, has gotten a little older as the series goes on and you can kind of see it in his face.
But younger or older actor aside, Data was my favorite character on Star Trek: The Next Generation, which is the only Star Trek series i ever indulged in, and its the one where patrick Steward played the captain, Jean Luc Picard. Which now that i recall, i was very fond of the captain as well. Actually, i really liked Worf, too.
Data is a very special android even in the high tech spacey world that he lives in, because he's super sophisticated technology, like top notch, and made in a personal lab and not made in any factory where you can just order a whole case of Wall-e units. He was one of a kind, even though he is part of a series, he was the most successful of Dr. Noonian Soong's androids, self maintaining, continually learning and applying knowledge, and apparently sentient enough to be acccepted as a high ranking officer in the star fleet. (The Yellow uniforms were for officers high enough to act as commanders but the red uniform was reserved for the captain and co-captain of the ship--uh, i think. Im not sure but i think the color code also changed from series to series.)
Highly intelligent but with a dry personality, of course, Data was not content to be a super sophisitcated piece of technoloy; because he could learn and apply things to himself and his surroundings, he quickly grew a fascination for humans and wanting to be human. Which is probably why he joined Star Fleet. To learn about people and cultures, both human and non human.
To me, this was actually a really sad story because it wasn't like Pinochio or the little mermaid because, there was no magic trident or magic fairy godmother to grant Data his wish no matter how good of a person he strived to be. So instead, he experimented and mostly mimicked things that humans did in an attempt to better understand them and gain a kind of human experience--and sometimes these experiences just happened along the way. These things included growing plants; learning to play poker with his crewmates; keeping a pet cat that he named Spot, who he took loving care of, made gifts for her, and wrote poetry for her and cared for her as she mothered a litter of kittens; using the Holo deck to pretend to be Sherlock Holmes; was captured by some creep collector to be part of a private collection of unique treasures; ask the doctor to teach him to dance once he ralized dancing was a required part of attending a wedding; took up violin playing, singing, and painting in order to explore creativity; specifically told the ship doctor that his name was pronounced Day-ta and not Dahtta, which she found it curious that an android could be sensitive about the pronounciation of his name; emulated a sleep pattern and even had a dream program--dont know how it worked but he did experience bad dreams at some point; was damaged to the point of having total amnesia; kept personal items of actual sentimental value even though Data said he cannot experience sentimentality; Actually dated and carried on a romance WITH sexual connotations; experienced sickness when he caught a compute virus; freakign faught off a group of ninjas! (comic versions only); was possessed by a ghost; return from a quick fetch quest to a ship full of people de-evolving into cavemen, primative alliens and fish people, with himself being the only person not infected with whatever it was that was effecting the crew and having to design a cure for it; lost a girlfriend to death; and maybe the most tragic of all tried to be a parent by building his own teen daughter. The tragedy was two fold since the higher ups thought they could take her away to study how she works, because before that point, Data was a ver special and unique case, so you dont want to damage your only copy. But His daughter's programming was unstable and she eventually ceased functioning--died, if you will. I also recall an episode where some young jerk scientist was so keen on learning how Data worked in order to build more high teck androids, with a precedure that would inevitabley destroy Data. The hot shot scientist sumbits a request to the higher ups to take Data's captain to court in a bid to force him to hand over the valuable android, so the crew have to put in eveything they got to show the court that Data is not "Star Fleet Property" and is in fact, as sentient as any human, so taking him apart against his will would be murder--and i agree. They won.
Even though he cared about his companions and being a good officer, Data couldnt really express himself or feel emotions, though some of the things he did seem to defy that, like keeping keepsakes of his dead girlfriend. So there were times when Data failed at being human, but there were also times when he was more human than he realized.
I didnt see every movie connected to TNG but i did see the one where the Borg Queen kidnapped Data because she wanted him to be her King and reign with her as she terrorized the universe, capturing biological creatures and turning them into cyborg slaves. At this point, Data had that special chip and it had been repaired, so he was able to feel the seduction and the temptation. I dont really remember much except how creepy the borg queen was and how she tried to put her metal paws on Data. man, she was like a horror movie all by herself.
There were other Soong built Androids out there, but only three of them were identicle. They were said to be built in Dr. Soong's likeness from a time when he was a young man. These other two are refered to as Data's "brothers" and they have their own names and their own distinctions despite having identicle faces. The Best known one was Lore. Now Lore is the android that came before Data, and he was built with a super sophisticated program that let him feel emotions, but in time, those emotions led to him developing into a total douchebag--he was narcassisitic, envious, arrogant, and a destructive traitor, so Soong took him appart and created Data, and Lore was the reason he left out the emotional program that Data always coveted. he ment to come back to lore and fix him. But Once Lore is up and working again, he was angry and resentful and very jealous of Data since he is Dr. Soong's Favorite android, which wasnt exctly a secret. Data would've love this chance to have family but Lore was so insistant on being an enemy. At the start of the series, everyone thought Dr. Soong died, so when its revelaed that he was still alive, its bittersweet because he's dying, so he doesnt have time to spend with Data or answer his questions. He had summoned both androids to say goodbye. So Data Lost Soong and lost Lore as soon as he found him--Lore's so angry and resentful and such a huge jerk, that when he learns Soong built a chip with that emotional program to give to Data as a parting gift, he steals it! And then he tampers with it, so when Data finally gets ahold of it, and installs it in himself, it causes him it act angry and hateful. It comes to a point where Data has no choice but to deactivate Lore before he destroys another planet. It was sad. Lore tried to manipulate him to the end with the parting words of "I...love...you...brother" (Ye, you have a terrible way of showing it, asshole.) Lore was very expressive, very smug and snide and sneaky.
The other brother was a prototype named B-4, pun intended 100 %, as in he was built before Lore and before Data. But because he was a prototype, his programming was a lot more simple--he didnt have their super high tech "positronic brain" so he had difficulty understanding simple concepts and processing information; which you always expect your first attempt at building something to be full of problems and glitches and things and so on, but B-4 is so basic that he's actually very different from Data and Lore for being such a low quality, and you figure Dr.Soong would have done a better job contructing him since the man is supposed to be a genius. Lore is often called Data's evil twin, but B-4 tells you Data was never a twin--he was part of a triplet set--sort of. Data copied his own memories into B-4, hoping it might help him develop, but the results weren't reassuring as he had trouble processing them, and Data finally had to be deactivated B-4 when it turned out the discovery of his disassembled body was not an accident, but a trap set for the crew, who took in the android and reassembled him, not realizing he had been tampered with to act as an unwitting spy. This was one of the movies. If you read the wiki on B-4, he is described as almost being dysfunctional and was actually tossed around from place to place and even thrown in the garbage at one point, which I imagine his dysfuntionalness probably caused others to see him as useless. A deleted scene is described as Data trying to teach him how to use a spoon, and B-4 fails at it. So unlike Lore, B-4 was very basic and unexpressive, even more so than Data. heck it seemed the poor thing could hardly think, then alone scheme sabotage and tretchery like Lore flippantly does.
In this particualr movie, where B-4 was introduced, Data finally meets his maker in the big Lab in the sky when he sacrificed himself and dies a hero--the big bad, a clone of Captain Picard, was at death's door and planned to take our beloved Captain with him, however Data beamed aboard and beamed out the captain to safety, after which, he shot the enemy ship's generator, destroying the whole damn thing and himself in the process, and thwarting the big bad's plan. This was the most human thing Data ever did--he saved his friends because he cared more about their lives than his own. For this, i hated that movie, and i still do. Picard goes to reactivate B-4 just to tell him about his Brother's heroic death, but its a sad scene because B-4 doesnt--or cant seem to understand what he's being told. And i suppose, Data's fans were suppost to take solice in knowing that a little part of Data survived in B-4 with the copied memories, which finally seem to be processing, indicated with B-4 inexplicably whistling a song that Data had performed at Riker and Troi's wedding.
But any hope that B-4 would grow to take Data's plae was dashed, as B-4 ended up being deactivated, and disassembled and moved out to a storage in a research facility. And it turned out that most of Data's positronic network was lost after the transfer. So that was it, that was the last of Dr. Soong's three androids. Lore is too dangerous to keep alive, and B-4 was tampered with and i supposed cant be fixed since his maker was already dead.
>Sigh<, I suppose if your favorite character has to die, going out a hero is the best way to go, but i dont care, i still hate seeing my favorite characters die, and Data was not an exception to that. I almost wish i had never seen that movie. But if yu like reading wikis, you can find extra info like if you read one of the novels, you'll learn that Dr. Soong didnt die because he transfered his mind into an android, and being unable to build a new body for Data, he instead absorbs Data's memories from B-4, this ends up melding him into a mix of two people an is now called Data Soong but he decides not to return to StarFleet and decides to forge a new path thats going supported by Soong's wealth. And continuing the theme of resurrection, the comics tell you Geordi installed Data's special emotion chip into B-4 which caused the uploads to B-4 by Data to fully activate, allowing Data's full memory and personality to assert itself, essentially resurrecting him. Starfleet decided to reinstate the android to service and, by the time of Countdown, B-4 who is now Data, had become captain of the ship. So in essence Data was resurrected in two seperate entities.
But if you dont read the comics and novels you would never have known that. Instead I would have liked another movie with some new bad to fight, but really it was just an excuse to re-write Data into the script and probably exactly the same way the comics did it, by Geordi fixing B-4 with Data's programs. although i think Data would be sad to know his brother was sacrificed to ressurect him, and then his friends would have to convince him, it was for the best because B-4 could hardly function as it is and would only serve to burden the crew with needing people to watch after and care for him.
Ah, all these tripping down memory lane makes me want to watch a few episodes for old time's sake. I would love to be able to see All three Androids together in an episode, but Im sure Lore would ruin it for everybody. He would probably start sabotaging Data and whatever plans he makes, being jealous, not only of him, but of how he takes care of B-4 and then act all justified and claim that the other two always exclude him, when really he excludes himself. Yeah, B-4 would probably need a lot of watching over and probably a lot of maintainance--i kind of see him causing a lot of accidents due to his inability to function properly. Lore would cause a lot of "accidents'' too but his are on purpose. But you know, dealing with a troubling sibling and another who'is essentially a special needs person would definately give Data a true human experience, one that causes a lot of stress and anxiety.
Maybe there's a fanfic of that out there somewhere that could grant my wish. Maybe I'll look for it some time. or Write my own crossover and have Sollux install new progarmming in B-4 while Equius does the body work. Where the heck did Data pick up these two and why is he so confident that they can help him with B-4? I dont know but the point of fanfiction is to explore the scenario.
Anyway, i have to wrap it up by saying that This is my homage to one of my most favortite robots, who's also an adroid. Whats the difference? Nothing really, just that Androids tend to be more human-like in appearance. But either way, i still remember fondly waiting and waiting for an episode starring Data so that i could learn more about him. I really wish i could have drawn him better, but even so, its nice to revist old favorites. Here is a quick 7 minute clip that talks about All the Data androids and the other ones if youre interested. Unlike my writing, it comes with lots of visuals.
