Well the first meaning is just on the surface level of the quote. Meeting in a place without darkness seems like a hopeful, happy thing. But, the meaning in the novel is a warning about O'Brien's eventual betrayal. When Winston is put in room 101, a torture chamber that has florescent lights on 24/7, he realizes that the quote from O'Brien from his dream earlier in the novel was a threat and not a beacon of hope.
For me it's a reminder of a few things. First, never take anything as it is on the surface. Always peel back the skin, always search for the truth. Second, it's a tribute to a book that changed how I saw English literature, and it inspired me enough to successfully achieve a Bachelor's degree in the field. Thirdly, it's a vague enough quote that when people ask about it, or they say "Hey, I've heard that before somewhere..." we can talk about the book. Everyone sees O'Brien's quote from Winston's dream a different way. Some say it really is a warning, while others say it's Winston's own idealism that misleads him to believe that O'Brien is on his side. So, that's always a fun conversation. Now, I can take my literature side of me wherever I go...pun intended.

Hi,
I'm doing a photographic project on George Orwell and love the tattoo. I was just wondering where in the world you lived and if you'd be interested in letting me photograph it?
Thanks so much,
Will

I'm in Georgia in the US. I'd be fine with a photo, but if you like, I can send you as many shots of it as you like - provided you credit the photo to me and my artist. If you want to talk about it or have questions, you can send me a note on here or feel free to email me. Thanks for your interest, by the way!

Awesome book + awesome quote = awesome tattoo!
I am really glad I saw this because I am getting a tattoo of a quote from the book Everything Is Illuminated by Johnathan Safran Foer and I wasn't sure what kind of script to use but seeing as you used the font like what would be a in a book, I really like it!

I adore this tattoo. Inspiring. 1984 is too awesome. And I like the fact that it's in that text like from a book (forgot what it's called)

yeah i liked that one too. his other books, "animal farm" and "how to shoot an elephant" are a bit less intense but are still really beautiful pieces. thanks so much for commenting!
