they are created by the player by placing 2 snow blocks on top of each other and then putting a pumpkin on top, but not in the crafting bench, like actually in game. :3

They throw snowballs at hostile mobs and follow you around. Althout i have two outside my house now, in a little fenced off patch, like auto-turrets. XD

Its kind of cute how suicidally loyal they are. More so than dogs, cause they fuck with EVERYTHING that even looks at you wrong. XD

I can imagine fencing them in front of my house on floating platforms like a bunch of little archers.

hehe, the best way to stop them moving around, without ruining their line of sight is to build a lava moat around them. They wont move from their little pedastle, and they get a clear shot at whatever baddies are about. Actually, it works double time, cause it means that the baddies run straight for the golem and into the lava. :3
