Description I learned a lot about hide restoration while getting the serval back into good condition. So I decided to share the step-by-step process of how I did it! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Also, the serval headdress IS for sale; more information is available at [link]

Thank you for taking the time to do this. It was very helpful and well done.  I really liked the tea tree oil tip!

I have a hide (not a serval, unfortunatly c in older condition. I'm looking into buying something to condition the leather; something to soften it up a bit. Is the mink oil you used here a particular brand?

There are a couple brands; just use whatever cream version you can find, as opposed to the liquid You can often find it with shoe polish supplies.

I have a fox tail that had the tip break off, and now I'm finding more places on the skin where it seems to be tearing. Is there anyway to fix it by hydrating the skin with olive oil or petroleum to keep it from tearing?

Unfortunately, if it's tearing that easily there's no way to undo the damage. What you might try doing is carefully pulling the tail open so all the leather is exposed, and then gluing a thin strip of fabric or leather down it to hold the fur together. (An extra pair of hands may be helpful )

That restoration is incredible! I'm in awe with how bright her colors really are. May I ask, with the wipes, did you just stroke with the grain? I have a genet that has a few dirty spots and with the tan so weak, I'm keeping my eyes open for anything that would put it at least risk.

Thank you! And yes, just carefully wipe with the grain of the hide; works very nicely.

Wow, servals are a lot bigger than I thought they were! What an amazing restoration, and kudos for the amount of work and love you put into returning her to her former glory.

*nods* I was pretty surprised, too; I was expecting something only a little bigger than a housecat. And thank you She's got a good home lined up with someone who's going to take very good care of her.

Is this the feline that your scraps are from? She is so gorgeous! Out of curiosity...How much is she going for?

It is, yes! And the serval already has a buyer, though I was asking $700 for her.

Really interesting! I don't work with hides, but I do work with parchment made from animal skin now and then, are you familiar with that?
