Description
Oh boy, time for something a little different...I've noticed that I haven't done enough art for the earlier chapters in The Fallen Star. I also reckon I haven't done enough 'depressive' scenes...
This scene happens after Bolden 3 was destroyed. At first, Ace doesn't believe it and he is furious about it. He leaves the Sonic 7 on his own ship, to go see for himself and once he comes across Bolden 3's coordinates... well; you can see his reaction right there. He notices the planet is completely destroyed, with some of the fragments floating about in space.
Those of you who don't already know, well Bolden 3 was his 'foster' home planet (like Veldin is to Ratchet). This really tears him up and is when he decides to disappear from the galaxy... into the unknown - eventually getting caught by Gleeman Vox's forces.
And before anyone here goes off about Ace being 'out of character', well it was said in his description on his official back-story that "Ace fell into a deep sadness and disapeared from the galaxy. Later he found Gleeman Vox and the rest is DreadZone history"
So there
***
OK now onto this drawing, it was a great practise for me I have to say. I did the perspective here 100% from my OWN mind. No references and why? because I could not find any for this angle I imagined, so I tried my best to do it by myself.
I used ruler lines to help and I think I pulled it off pretty well; it isn't perfect but it is better than any other perspective scene I've done so far. But if you really, REALLY want to, you can point out anything.
And it is also very rare for me to draw 'tears' in my art too; even in OB there was no teary eyed/crying scenes, besides Cortex I believe, lol. So they were kind of tricky to paint here, but I did enjoy working with this piece, even if it isn't the best I've done.
But yeah, hope you guys like it anyways. I want to give him a hug :C
I'm gonna do a more light hearted and funny scene next

Really? I didn't think I was that good... although I am trying to get better as I go. Especially if I try to from scratch (which I did for this one, but it was years ago XD)
And a new speedpaint video... funny you mention that. On Skype tonight, another friend of mine asked if I could do a new one and I might do just that when I get the time. Since I use SAI for most digital art nowadays.

Wow, I must say you did a fantastic job with this piece, the dramatic angle along with the gloomy lighting and colors as well as Ace's expression really capture the emotion of the situation, you can't help but to symphatize with him here.
Great job with this one!

Poor guy ;_: I wanted to do a depressed screenshot with Ace too, maybe after the planet gets destroyed and he's thinking of it. He looks so devastated in this picture and that he realizes what just happened. If that happened to earth I'd be horrified too. I feel for him.
But anyways good work on this. I like the darker colors here, really sets the somber sad mood very well here. I need to comment on more of your stuff but I"ve just been lazy, I still look at it though haha. Keep up the great work!

Yeah, I waited quite a long time to draw this scene. I wanted to ages ago when I started my story for him but I couldn't sketch it right. But yeah, it was sad; especially since he had no chance to save the planet too and ends up getting blamed for it.
And that's fine with the comments I've been kinda lazy too, too busy writing more chapters and also taking breaks from DA too XD But yeah thanks a lot ^^

Oh my! This is really beautiful!
I also feel sorry for Ace, seeing that his home planet got into a disatruous predicament. 3
However, this is really something different and unique from other screenshots! I never saw tears cascading down from Ace either, so this totally emotional.
Fascinating work as always! I love the shade and lighting effects of the darkness here!

Well I can't really blame Ace for acting like this at all. Everyone would be devastated if their hometown (or home planet for fictional characters were blown to bits).
But wow, really capturing stuff here Tara. I really love the perspective and tone. It definitely fits well with Ace's depressing mood here. The maybe a bit hard to see though in some areas, but you got the worm's eye view spot on. Well done!

In space, no one can see how sad your hair can truly be.
I'm saying that because it's so upsetting to Ace even his hair is sad and droopy - actually the first thing I noticed, how floppy his hair looks
Back onto more serious terms, I like the perspective though his middle insignia could have done being tilted a little more to the left however it's barely noticable. His tattoo looks so shiny and I steal shiny things. Can I run away with his arm? Think he'd notice?
I can't think of anything to say about the other bits you've posted so I'll just say fav spam imminent

Lurking-Leanne In reply to HuskiBunni [2011-03-06 20:55:39 +0000 UTC]
Haha I was waiting for someone to say that
Well yeah, his hair is also shorter at this age XD but yeah, it just suits him to make his hair droop down a bit when he's sad; even in the game when he gets defeated and tells Ratchet to watch out for Vox, his hair is down but yeah, thanks a lot too 8D

Well, I think that you captured the mood perfectly and he still is in character. I remember reading that official bio when I bought the Dreadzone Official Game Guide for references. So yeah, you definitely didn't stray away from his character. It still is pretty sad to see him like that... I can only imagine how he must have felt seeing his own planet destroyed...
Really nice usage of colors here and I just love the background. Awesome screenshot Tara.

polar27 [2011-03-06 08:49:30 +0000 UTC]
Wow, just wow! This is... to amazing, theirs no words to describe how emotional this piece is. Stuff like this is rare from you, but you pulled it off well.
I can see the tense, devastated look on his face, the sad emotion gleaming from his eyes. You can just feel the pain he's in, I mean who else wouldn't react like that if their home planet was destroyed. All those memories, all the friends, towns
This picture does Ace great justice, it make him seem more humane, not just a hot headed jerk. It's emotional, thats all I can say, and you captured that well.
I love the coloring in here, the depth and dark tones adds to the feeling, and the sky in the background is amazing. Feels like your in space with Ace (no rhyme intended XD)
Anyways wonderful work again, Leanne. I love every bit of this drawing, from the perspective to the emotion.

yeah it is really rare for me to draw these sorts of emotions in my art, especially since the OB series didn't have much of it when I look back I was waiting a while to finally draw one for TFS, but I couldnt sketch it right... until now anyway XD
But really though, thanks a lot for the great comment ^^ I appreciate it a lot.

Great perspective. But it's a good thing I had a full view look of this piece. From the thumbnail it looked like he was all tough and emboldened and ready to battle.
But upon closer observation I see that he is actually disheartened and crying. You know even the toughest of guys can shed tears. But I think it would have to be something pretty extraordinary to have me make Sin cry. XD
Witnessing the death of anyone's home planet could drive a person to this kind of sadness. (Though Princess Lea took it quite well in Star Wars.)
I love the lighting too. Rendering is clearly becoming your fortee'.
Another brilliant piece as usual. Keep drawing. ^__^
