Description Entry for 's contest to create one of her "Fennedibles". Nifty little critters they are.

------------------------------
Name: Altosanas
Location: Though rare, it's found in almost all places that can hold temperatures from 15 degrees to 30 degrees Celsius (59 to 86 F).
Rarity: Somewhat rare, though becoming more common due to them being quite helpful in the harvesting business
Size: When legs are totally spread out, 20" legspan. The "body" is roughly 5" long.
Taste: Not ment for eating (*SEE EXTRA TRAITS), but if you were to, the membrane would have a slightly bitter and poisonous taste, and the body would taste similar to overcooked crab meat.
Danger Level: Low (to humans, a little more dangerous to smaller creatures)
Poisonous: Partially, only to small creatures. Poison is secreted from the "claws" and causes temporary paralysis.
Any extra traits: The Altosanas have very thin stretchy membrane between each of their legs, and to their hanging arms. This membrane, when caught in even the most slight wind, creates a very high pitched sound. Humans are unable to hear this sound (like how we cannot hear dog whistles, our ears are not sensitive enough) so we are unaffected by it, but almost all other creatures are met with severe pain in the ears when it is heard. This is a defense mechanism of this particular fennedible and humans have become to harvest them to "protect" their orchards and other crops. Generally these are quite rare, but they are gaining in popularity because of the benefits of their help in the crop industry.
Using their very strong "fingers" located on the top of the critter, they hang from branches, suspending themselves below the branch, and spread their legs out wide as to create a tighter stretch for the membrane. The membrane also converts light energy into food energy, but generally this would not be enough to sustain the Altosanas, so there is also a mouth of sorts located between the "fingers" which slowly chews up and digests bark from trees to get the remaining nutrients that it needs.
--------------------------------

Not really crazy about the name but its a sort of combo between the latin translations of "sound" and "high".

But I love the concept and the design. I came up with it a looong time ago, like when the contest first started, but I only drew it up a few days ago. I like it a lot.

Even though I meant for my handwriting on the ref sheet to look really quick and scratchy, you may still wanna know what it says.
- 4 grabbing "fingers" that are used for clinging to branches. Very sharp claws.
- Thick and tough exterior (skin)
- Each leg roughly 9" long when fully extended
- Slow moving
- Sharp claws at the end of each leg. Secretes a mild poison causing temporary paralysis
- Network of veins in membrane
- Very delicate + thin membrane. Creates a high-pitched sound

Enjoy!

Wow this is really something I love the textures on this! The dark feel to the Fenn. It's rather unique from a lot of other entries, yet still retains the traits to make it a believable Fenn. Your traits from the temperatures to the various anatomy bring it all together in a most convincing way. I'd believe it was real XD Your extra traits were also nicely illustrated and a pleasure to read. Very nice design!

Thanks for entering I'll add this to my journal~

Thank you!

Yeah I tried to branch out from the typical ideas for these Fenns, and I must say, cool idea! There are so many places you can go with Fennedible designs!

Aww, finally getting some deviantART time now and see what I find: awesome creature designs They make me happy.

This critter is absolutely wicked. It looks to me like it came straight out of some awesome Stephen King novel. I'm really happy this thing doesn't crawl around on our planet. It would totally freak me out to know it lived in the very forest I was walking in.

The lay-out of this sheet is really neat. Clean, pretty and informative. The only thing I have problems with is reading your hand writing. But that makes me happy because now I know I'm not the only one with that problem

The style you have drawn this in is raely pretty. I don't know why but it looks very proffessional and realistic. The shading and texturing is just top notch.

Lastly: the concept. Wow, just wow, the story behind it is very convincing and original. I just recently tried to come up with a believable, original species but it's really hard. And you totally nailed it. I haven't seen anything like this before, but I can totally picture it in its world, I just see it crawling over the ground and clinging to a branch. I can even imagine what it would feel like if you touched it, the membrane and the body itself.

So you 100% succeeded on this entry, congrats on such an awesome idea!

Yikes, if critters like this were hanging from the trees in our forests, I'd be pretty freaked out while walking in them. Mind you, these particular guys aren't out to hurt you, they just look kinda creepy.

Haha no one can ever read my handwriting. Except my teachers, thank God, but it seems that all my teachers have crazy handwriting themselves so they're always able to read mine. But no one else can. Especially my notes. People try to read them, and fail. I just tell them that as long as I can read them, then they're fine. xD

These are almost painfully cute! And their description rocks too, what a totally realistic and cool creature. I love how you drew the little fingers at the top of the body. The membrane is really neat too and I just adore the story behind it too, very well thought out! I wish I had one actually, or a bunch of them hanging from the tree in the yard or something.

Haha I guess people like creepy little insect things. Personally I don't describe anything that looks like this as cute, but that's because I HATE insects. Ugh. Except I don't mind spiders, which is weird. xD
Though I do agree that they would look kinda nifty hanging all together in trees.

Thanks love <3<3

This beastie is such a cool creature! It kind of reminds me of the face-huggers from "Alien", but thank goodness these guys rely mainly on bark . I also think that's really neat that they function as a natural means to protect crops. Nicely done!

Gah computer hiccuped there, I left you the wrong reply.
Here's what I meant to send: xD

Yeah I gave a lot of thought into the concept, so I'm pretty pleased with it. And I totally agree with you about being glad that they depend on bark. I'm sure they could really do some damage, much like those horrifying face-huggers. xP

Haha glad you think so.
I tend to generally hate insects of any sort so its rare that I would consider any of them cute. xD
