This Moonlight cames from a parallel universe, where Equestria is a danger because of nightmare creatures, and ponies need to fight against those nightmare creatures to save their land. Moonlight never knew her her parents, they where killed by nightmare creature when she was a filly, her adoptive parents found her on the ground almost dead after been attack by a nightmare creature, that explains her back marks on her body. So she was raised by 2 talented scientist that teach her everything about chemistry. The fact that she never knew her parents and that she has to know how to do potions to save Equestria gives her a lot of pressure, so she became pessimistic and cold, and nopony saw her smile, not even once. Moonlight is just doing what she has to do even if she thinks there is no hope, she is still trying.
