Description
there's still a lot of grain in the image because of the extremely slow rendering speed, and because my poor cpu is throttling under the 100 degree celsius heat!it's a generalised (hypercomplex) julia set.

cheers it's done with my 3d renderer "allura", it's a very early mandelbulb-julia render

I find that the grain makes it look even more realistic, Just like a B&W old school photo (of a wiered jelly fish). excellent.

luckily things are a bit more reasonable these days, with CMOS transistor leakage being better under control

Great! I think the grain even does something good to the picture It looks like a coral with it

thanks! yep good grain is a flavoursome ingredient indeed

I'm glad to see new devs from you. It's been awhile since I've been on this site and even longer since I've contributed.
What great change are you referring to (general or personal)?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
lyc In reply to beason [2009-12-10 11:53:06 +0000 UTC]
both general and personal; i think just about everyone and their dog is looking into gpu programming at the moment... there are so many incredible programmers out there, it's scary stuff
it has indeed been a while, you should have some more PixelFun (tm), and i should do more renderer coding

thank you i made a newer image using this fractal iteration function, much higher resolution and better material etc, much better than this i hope!

I wait that version. Now it looks very interesting already.

it's already in my gallery, "siebenfach" (same basic formula as this shape, it's zoomed in near the poles)

Ah huh~ I thought about that in some seconds but I didn't realize that they're one. Then thanks 4 info.
BTW, few days ago I saw ur question about 3D brake disk (in someone' render) - check this link n find more about it. Maybe there isn't exact highpoly model but If you just want some complicated or mechanical model for test ur renderer, try that - hllp://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/search?q=brake+disk&styp=m&btnG=Search

awesome, you studied palaeontology
and yeah, there's something weirdly organic about this, most fractals tend to be quite geometric / synthetic looking. glad you like it

Actually, I have a degree in Earth Science. Just never did anything with it. *sigh*
The picture made me think of electron microscope pictures or something...

oh, a buddy of mine is in a similar situation - he got a BSc in comp sci but it doesn't look like he'll be using it (currently studying mandarin chinese). it still makes sense though, because a degree often isn't directly pertinent to the job one wants but still indicates a level of commitment (which is why i still don't have one!)

That it one lovely fractal, I see you're sticking with the pink theme Just a quick question, what was the grid resolution you used there? .. just very very curious given the absolutely sick amount of detail in that
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
lyc In reply to Darnal [2009-09-27 22:30:12 +0000 UTC]
no grid, basically i just do a lazy cache of previous potential function evals. that's of course not so efficient given how incoherent the secondary rays are, but oh well
and um, at least on the screens i've been using at home and at work, don't really see any pink

Darnal In reply to lyc [2009-09-28 21:16:03 +0000 UTC]
Ahh with you, still a very functional if not as efficient as I'm sure you'd like it to be Now pink may be a bit strong but its definitely more purple than white. [0.202, 0.166, 0.202] is the average RGB value in that image. I see it on all 3 monitors at work I just checked and my home one ... am I going mad?

lyc In reply to Darnal [2009-09-28 22:53:54 +0000 UTC]
lulz, i see what you mean but the overall impression i get is more like purple (often mistaken for pink, but it has more green).
i'll be getting my pc fixed up tomorrow finally, can't wait to pwn that i7 properly with some fractal rendering

100? Where's the fire extinguisher? No, nevermind... let it cook itself to death and get a better one - then render this bigger and better.

sounds pretty expensive! mind you, just got a quote on getting my pc fixed up (new case, power supply and heatsink, cleaning old one etc.) and it comes to about NZ$ 500

Wow ! That's a lot just for a tune-up/clean-up.
I really must get an upgraded PSU so I can plug in this ATI X1900XT (instead of my old X600).

it's really a new case, psu and heatsink (all quite good, no lame stuff). plus servicing. but yeah the aforementioned items are all severely overpriced in nz

The new PSU (750W and up to 30A for video card) I need will cost around £45 here.
