Description If you looked at my page of landscape sketches a few files back, you may remember this composition there. This painting was pretty fun and I'm happy with some of the texture that I got. I need more practice with environments, though. A lot more.

Greetings,
I was wondering if it was alright for me to use this artwork for a banner on a roleplay site called "Animal Jam Clans Wiki"? I will gratefully provide you complete credit in your username with a link to your DeviantArt profile as I will also not diminish the appearance of the image in any sort of way.

Nice job. The only problem I see is the weird yellow capping the stone, it does not look natural.

Yeah, that's meant to be "golden hour" light striking the top of the cliffs, but it indeed too exaggerated.
Thanks!

Wow, I really like this. As most other commenters said, the water looks great. I also love how you can still see the brushstrokes in some places... kind of sketchy, but not messy.

The texture, the lighting, the mood...really well done. I love the atmospheric perspective, and the water is the greatest detail (I love how it reflect the sky and distant cliffs.) Really great work - I've got to start playing around on ConceptArt sometime soon...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

M0AI In reply to FoxGrin [2009-01-06 01:14:03 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, FoxGrin. The water was definitely the funnest part to paint. Most of the rest of the painting is shadowy, with a limited value range, and everything had a hard and definite shape. Then I got to the water, and was free to draw in some brighter colors and more freeform shapes!
And by all means, play around on ConceptArt.org. It's a great place!

Yeah, the stream really ties it all together, it's such a jewel : )

Is this in Painter? I've been playing with Painter X for a few months, but my background is in Photoshop and Illustrator and I'm trying to figure out how to take advantages of Painter for the things it can do that the others can't. By default, I seem to use Painter like I would use Photoshop brushes and that kinda defeats the purpose, yanno?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

M0AI In reply to FoxGrin [2009-01-07 01:02:26 +0000 UTC]

This is in photoshop, using textures and dual brush. I've tried Painter X a few times, but I find it frustrating. When I paint, it seems like the brush does what it wants to do, rather than what I want it to do! There are too many brushes also, very overwhelming.

FoxGrin In reply to M0AI [2009-01-07 04:00:38 +0000 UTC]

I've played with the brush palette and I understand most of the settings - except those two! They mystify me a bit and I haven't taken the time to figure them out. Have you got any useful tips or specific tutorials you could point me in the direction of? I have found the same exact thing with Painter: I'm literally overwhelmed with the brushes and they're hard to control and I'm not even sure what the effect I'm trying to achieve with one of them could be

I always find myself analyzing geologic/topographic landscape paintings now in terms of your breakdown of the three planes/axes of space along which the rendering ideally develops. It looks to me as though you've already begun to transcend those "rules" or apply them with a new sophistication, a sensitivity to diagonals and other such vagaries that come into play in any chaotic natural form. Once again I'm impressed and amazed!

M0AI In reply to thomastapir [2009-01-05 06:47:13 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the comment, man. Yeah, I was really excited to have that breakthrough, and it's very useful for many types of rock formations. However, rather than transcending my rules here, I felt more like I was haphazardly ignoring them!
