I think it's more that the rocks are keeping her hoof down...and likely hurt it a bit. Besides, can you think straight when you got something hurting your foot?

Maybe his incompetence goes higher whenever he's not helping Twilight. Like you said, he's helped Twilight, no doubt, for years, but how long has he helped the others in everyday tasks? Not saying I'm trying to defend his incompetence, it just feels like whenever he's not helping Twilight, he's not as effective. But that's just me, and I could be way out of the league with my theory.

Spike tries to clean AJ's house, but with only a broom he manages to cover the entire kitchen i dough! Just... HOW!?
The episode was just horrible, no way around it.

The only episode so far that I didn't really like (except for this one) was Too Many Pinkie Pies, I think. Can't really say why, didn't really like it.
Other than that, I've loved almost every other episode, though Babs Seed was kinda meh.
