Description
This is the cover of a card I made for my Grandparents. They love nature pics of all kinds, so I thought they'd like this. This is my version of a speed paint, took me 3 hours. It's all watercolors. The card is about 5 inches by 5 inches.

For some reason this didn't show up in my messages. Really great stuff. The feathers came out great. The whole piece has some really effective textures. I have recently learned that getting your textures right is actually harder than perspective. Good Job!

Everyone's cooing over the feathers (which are very well done indeed, especially with the simulation of iridescence), but the branch keeps causing my jaw to drop. The knot looks well and truly gnarled, making complete sense (continuity, biological purpose and fluidity, etc.) and expressing the time of year perfectly. And I really like the way you lightened the hue of the twig toward its tip, pointing it into the background, giving a little hope that spring is waiting to make its entrance.
Did your grandparents end up enjoying your card?

Pretty cool Good subject and composition. The textures are so amazing, I can't believe you did that with watercolour! That said, I would've liked the bird to be a little more...impressionist I guess, I dunno, it seems almost too controlled or unnatural. You got me searching Google images
[link] different parts of the body have feathers in different sizes and shapes.
The berries look a little strange. They look like they're outlined instead of highlighted. I know it's a pain to get the highlights right with watercolour. Instead of leaving the white of the paper you could just paint the entire shape with watercolour, and then go back after and add some shiny spots with thin white acrylic. I think there's an opaque white watercolour, too, but I've never used it. Ooh, or you could take wax [certain brands of white colored pencil will do] and put in all the highlights first. Watercolours won't stick to it
Keep experimenting with colour mixing! If you add blues or purples to brown it makes a great, deep shadow that looks very convincing.

Thank you so much, Oleem. That's great advice worth taking to heart. I agree with it all, hopefully I'll get a chance to try again soon and apply it.
I really liked the white highlights bit, I seem to always do things the hard way. So funny. Thanks.

This is done with watercolour paints? Yes, you're not the only one who gets stunned by a medium's potential
The brushstrokes are so fine, I thought it was colour pencil. This is very good for only 3 hours, I take so much longer to do realistic pictures...

Mafeo In reply to bonnielau [2009-01-06 14:51:10 +0000 UTC]
My work, to me, is just an impression of realism. I wouldn't know where to begin if trying for reality.
That's why I'm so fascinated by your work. It's very deliberate and accurate. Two things I know little about.
