Appearance:  Unlike his youngest sister Riley, Roland doesn’t bother trying to change his appearance. The Fink boys have always been luckier than their sisters: inheriting their father’s strong jawline and thick brows. It definitely compliments the men more-so than the women. His brown hair is messy and unkempt no matter how short he cuts it, and his five o-clock shadow often remains for days before he remembers to shave. His physique is lean, if not a little underfed at times, reaching an average height at 5’11’. Scratches and bruises almost always adorn his skin, temporary badges that boast his outdoorsy lifestyle. His clothes usually stay in his wardrobe until they fall apart and he’s forced to buy new ones. To stay the impending purchases Roland will often patch the elbows of his sleeves and knees of his jeans so they remain intact as long as possible. His calloused hands are practically stained black from the ink he so often uses, giving you a chance to figure out his hobby by sight alone. Similarly, even if you don’t speak to Roland, you’ll be able to tell two things by his scent. One, he loves cigarettes and coffee, and two, he often spends his evenings by a campfire. He’s definitely a man who isn’t ashamed of his lifestyle. That, or he just doesn’t care enough to do anything about broadcasting it…it’s probably the latter.

Personality:
Roland is aged somewhere in the middle of the Fink brood. One of the middle children of twelve, Roland learned a good way to survive in a house of so many was a near-impenetrable shield of sarcasm. Roland was often teasing younger and older siblings alike. A bit of a black sheep, his voice was a dry commentator on all the stupid happenings of the home. Still, he got along with all of them well enough, even if he wasn’t particularly close to any. Roland was usually out of the house too long most days to experience real bonding moments with his family. Instead, he got his kicks elsewhere, gone from dawn to dusk and returning without anyone ever noticing he was gone. It made it a lot easier to leave home when he finally had the cash. He’ll occasionally write to his family to let them know he’s alive but rarely visits, not wanting to get sucked back into the farm.

The man prefers to be out and about, always on the move. A day home is a day wasted, which is probably why he doesn’t mind such a transient lifestyle. Roland carries his entire life on his back: usually just hygiene supplies, clothes, cigarettes, a Polaroid camera, and his books. His satchel will always be near him in case he needs to get up and go somewhere fast. This feeling of spontaneity carries to other facets of his life, being a man of action rather than words. Don’t call his bluff, because you’ll probably find out he wasn’t kidding.

Roland is soft-spoken, even if his words are usually laced with cynicism hidden behind a smile. Even-tempered to a fault, it’s hard to make him mad, but sometimes even harder to make him genuinely laugh if distracted. He doesn’t mind conversation and has no problem initiating, but his mind will sometimes drift to his work when he should be listening. He has a vice for cigarettes and coffee, substitutes for a lack of and/or restless sleep. The bags that are almost always under his eyes indicate they aren’t the best alternatives in the world. His lifestyle is a lonely one, leaving Roland to be a bit of a lone wolf when he’s working. It might be why he’s been visiting the other islands as of late: a desperate need for a decent conversation.

Background: Roland left the farm earlier than the rest of his family anticipated. He didn’t need to save up money for some apartment in the city, or a shop of his own. He just needed enough cash for a ticket off Anura. He disrupted the flow of exiting siblings by moving out sooner than several of his older brothers and sisters. It lit a fire in them to not be the last ones left in the home originally. Once he was gone the competition to see who would be left manning the farm truly went underway, a competition Riley is still fighting to this day...just in a different sort of way. Roland was there when their father unveiled the secret Fink fortune, he just didn't have an interest in it. His life had already taken a particular course, and life on the farm wasn't in his future.

On his first few years out on the road, Roland lived life to the fullest, traveling between islands, partying with friends, crashing on a different couch each night. Life didn’t need to be taken seriously with no one breathing down his neck about ‘chores’ or ‘responsibility’. It was during a dark night on some icy roads that Roland’s life changed. A motorcycle accident left him in the hospital for months, a back injury nearly risking paralysis. When it healed he still felt pain, sometimes completely debilitating. The doctors admitted there wasn’t anything more they could do for him. It gave Roland perspective, and a lot of time in bed to read books. It was there he read about Divinity Island, and about healing waters that could fix his injury. What started as a mild interest became a fascination. The more he read about the lore and history, the more his aimless traveling suddenly gave way to purpose. Notes he began jotting down for research slowly filled one notebook after the next. While he couldn’t get to Divinity Island without a boat, Roland began to travel elsewhere, not letting his injury stop him from living deep in the forests of Trojan to the Wizard’s coast of Serseri.

For two years, Roland saved for a teeny boat from a tiny inn-room in the fishing village on Tacoma. He absorbed whatever he could from the nearby fishermen until he could afford a boat himself. That time came when his first book was published, based on his historical findings he discovered on Tacoma through many adventures. The book was a hit in niche circles, earning him enough funds for a small boat and a book deal. Roland hastily used all he had on a sad but seaworthy vessel he endearingly named "Becky" and already planned on his next book being about his adventures on Divinity island. Things seemed to be going his way...that is until Becky was mysteriously sunk one fateful night. You can still see her corpse through the crystal clear Ki waters if you stand on the docks. Roland often visits and vows to find whoever prematurely took her and his chances at Divinity from this world, but to this day has not found the culprit.

With funds low and his new book on Divinity pressing him to acquire some new funds fast, Roland was desperate. In said desperation, he wrote a small series of dime-store romance novels under the pseudonym R. L. Fine called 'Tickets to Paradise', based off the Rail-road islands themselves.  Sometimes his experiences got blurred in the pages... but they've become a sleeper smash. His side gig was suddenly giving him more revenue than his main job and also more pressing deadlines. Now Roland is juggling his newfound work revenue while also trying to plan his next big expedition.  He's not sure if that makes him better off than before, but despite all his grumbling to himself he still manages to make every deadline for the next book in the breathtakingly schmaltzy series.

Fun Facts:

-Roland draws fairly well, sketching what he sees between notes in his books.

-Roland’s back injury can sometimes leave him bedridden, but he refuses to admit it to anyone, especially his family.

-Is a fairly competent outdoors-man.

-He can sleep anywhere given half the chance.

-Excelled in school before junior year and loves reading. Used to tutor some of the younger siblings and their friends.

-Not great at keeping in touch with people. Usually loses track of things often.

-Can’t multitask, don't ask him a question when he's reading, he won't hear you at all.

-Doesn’t mind loud noises or being touched, living with so many siblings desensitized him to those sort of things.

-Secretly enjoys writing his cheesy romantic books...the characters just come flying off the pages! He'll never admit it but writing this stuff comes easier than his more serious pursuits.
