Description ...Yeah. I really need to get to bed.

Yes, that's Nintendo's R.O.B. One of the most useless peripherals of the original NES, he's redeemed himself as a playable character in Mario Kart DS. At least I think he redeemed himself.

Not sure why I drew this, but I did. Voila.

EDIT: Fixed a color. Now I'm going to go to bed. X3

He's also made a cameo in a boss stage of Wario Ware that involved Star Fox as well.

Indeed, his most recent appearance. Wielding a Zapper with weaknesses strategically placed on four of the platforms for his Stack-Up game.

Hard to believe the goofy little robot actually sorta helped the NES take off in America.

BRILLANT!!

even if R.O.B was useless, I still want one, although I don't an NES...

Heh! I sorta wish I had one too just because. It could've really helped me make this drawing.

Instead, I got stuck using yich photographs online, and the little R.O.B. picture from the Japanese Mario Kart site.

What was R.O.B.'s original purpose, anyhow?

Anyway, this is pretty funny. You can't deny that he is at least recognizable in the Nintendo world.

MalamiteLtd In reply to AlanES [2006-02-18 00:07:37 +0000 UTC]

R.O.B.'s original purpose? There's a story to it, and it's sorta summarized in Wired's top 50 robots of all time. R.O.B. was #45.

45. NINTENDO R.O.B.
In the mid-'80s, the PC was killing the market for videogame consoles. The game industry's only hope? A robot. Nintendo packaged the Robotic Operating Buddy with the 1985 Nintendo Entertainment System. The R.O.B. didn't do much, but the gimmick helped Nintendo sneak systems onto shelves. Lo, the console market was saved.

He must've played a big part despite how much of a waste of technology he ended up being. At least he looks rather fancy. :3

Yah, but it did help the video game industry rise from the ashes. Amazingly enough. :3

wasn't there a R.O.B. in Starfox 64?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MalamiteLtd In reply to Jim-Prower [2006-02-17 14:37:52 +0000 UTC]

There was, but he certainly didn't look like that. Although one of the bosses--Spyborg, they call it here--is said to be based on a R.O.B. prototype. Perhaps that's why it kept saying "I must be complete" and "Where is the creator?"

I gots no life to be looking all this stuff up online. X3

MalamiteLtd In reply to Nakarie [2006-02-17 14:26:19 +0000 UTC]

Heh! Well, if not in actual form, he's shown up in a few games as a cameo too.

R.O.B. was a cute idea in concept, but the support was very, VERY slim. Only two games were made that supposedly support R.O.B., one normally included with it (Gyromite)...and THAT game doesn't even really need him! O.o

Folks are usually trying to get Gyromite not because it's a good game, but because the game is a standard Japanese Famicom game connected to a special converter! With this converter in hand, it could allow folks to play Japanese Famicom games on their own Nintendo systems! X3

MalamiteLtd In reply to chaosgundam [2006-02-17 14:29:40 +0000 UTC]

Well, little robots suck. Which is why I made R.O.B. bigger. Because in reality he was small...and he sucked. X3

At least he's good in Mario Kart. :3

Wow, you have so many crazy thoughts... i love 'em!

By the by, R.O.B. made a cameo in F-Zero GX on the GameCube. He's a giant robot thing in Famicom colors outside one of the tracks.

MalamiteLtd In reply to frostdemn [2006-02-17 14:30:51 +0000 UTC]

Heh! R.O.B. seems to have a number of cameos out there. I recall seeing him in Gamecube's Viewtiful Joe, around the beginning of the last stage in the background.

It makes me wonder how Gyromite really was, though...

MalamiteLtd In reply to frostdemn [2006-02-18 05:18:03 +0000 UTC]

You could probably play it on emulator. Just assign A & B buttons for a second controller and you can play it fine (you'll need 'em). :3

I wonder if R.O.B. was still there in the PS2 version...
