Description
Looks like fun, huh. Well don't fool yourself, this is the shorebreak at the famous Waimea Bay. Lifeguards will only allow the most experienced bodyboarders to surf at this spot. Forget about how big the wave is, its the thickness that will consume a rider in seconds.Thanx for viewing,
Aloha, Mana

That is one heavy shorebreak. Used to dream about it when i was young. Now i think those dreams would be more nightmares. Great shot.

I used to live just down the road from here. Freakin' pumping place, bra. My bro and I used to ride some of these -we were just kids, 13 and 8 and didn't know any better. Sometimes we'd go watch the wipeouts and wait for them to come back up for air, only to eat it again. The coral out there maybe worse than the pipeline... But at least it was close to shore, eh? The bravest of us would head to the north shore and take a few on a small day- we were just kids though. Slater was out there sometimes and people like that- but this was before they were famous- just kids. Thrusters were still catching on, and long-boarding was still the rage. I had a giant board that was 3 times as tall as I was- looked like a giant chicitta banana, complete with the banana label! One fin and it steered like a semi. LOL!
My favorite times was night time on a full moon- if you caught the time right, when the jellies weren't coming in, you could sit out there and wait for a perfect set, and take the biggest of them. But more, it wasn't about the waves so much as the view and surviving the fast and thickness of the waves here.
We went out once in 84-85 right before the hurricane hit- it was insane. Looked like the pipeline but up close- no needing jetski's to get out there. Not a soul but a few hard cores on the beach just watching like us kids. Some old local went in and wiped out and we didn't see him come up. I'm sure he survived, but we went home to get out of the weather.
I sure miss the waves in HI, big time.

theres a high tide break on a heavy swell like that on the south coast of the uk, not saying where cause its not well know, but I know exactly whats about to happen to the boogie rider in a moment.
I was picking shingle and sand out of my face for a week after, well worth it though.
awesome shot.

Hey man... just wanted to say thanks for the awesome surf pics that you've posted. Having been a bodyboarder for many years and now having to live inland, far from the coast, it is good to be able to view such images, even if I cannot be there. Although it's a bit of a two edged sword because then I miss it even more ... he he. Keep up the great work.

hey thanx...yeah, he's kinda airborne right there. He's fall back into the wave and bottomturn into a big closeout section, rarely do these guys ever escape a serious pounding.
