Description
This was my first attempt at making a semi-practical version of the Dark Knight. My favorite feature, his Giant Ears of Death, are probably the least practical thing on him. Anyhow, I went with the white eyes, and my explanation is that they are infrared lenses that retract into his cowl when he doesn't need them. I also gave him a lot of extra storage space in the form of more belt pouches and cargo pockets. I mean, Batman carries a lot of stuff around with him, so I thought a few tiny little belt pouches wouldn't exactly do the trick. Anyhow, here's the explanation of the stuff that's not readily apparent:The outer suit is Kevlar woven spandex (the same stuff that motorcycle racers use). Under that, he wears knee pads (slightly visible in this picture). Also under the suit is ceramic plate armor, and that's why his chest muscles look a little too angular. The idea is that the armor is in segments and overlaps at the joints, so that it gives him a complete range of motion while still affording him some protection against direct gunshots. I never liked the big ol' chestplates from the movies because I always thought batman should be more acrobatic, so I came up with this idea to suit that. Anyhow, he also has a knife mounted on the side of his big buckley boot (yay for big buckley boots, and alliteration!), and two long fighting knives at the back of his utility belt. If you look closely you can see all of them. Also, again if you look closely, you can see the handle of his grappling gun thingy slightly hidden by his right thy. So, any thoughts?

Nice! Great redesign. Do you have any professional training? Also, does the cape have any functionality in this drawing, or is it just a piece of cloth?

Thanks! I don't have any professional training beyond a couple of basic college level figure art classes. And this was actually done well before that, actually. As for the cape, I had originally envisioned it as being fireproof and having weighted tips with barbs on them that could be used in a fight, but after seeing the Dark Knight trilogy, I'm now extremely partial to the cape-glider idea Nolan introduced.

Yeah, if you're going for the cape-glider and want it to be realistic, insure that the cape is somehow 30m, as the standard length of 15m (just about Batman's height) is too short to glide in reality. Although the weighted tips with barbs is a good idea.

Liking the concept and execution of design. I always wondered how he could produce so many different items in one foray without stopping by the Batmobile to 'gear up' .
Kudos.

Thanks! And yeah, I figured he needed a little more storage space, heh. This was done quite a while ago, and I think I would do it a bit differently now, but overall I like where I went with it at the time.

Awesome! Cool as a polar bear's feet in liquid nitrogen on the design front. Artwork is excellent, and the description is plain brilliant. Were it not for my cool, calm, distant persona, I'd be squealing with joy at the perfect tech-details and explanations. Well thought out, man, and the Giant Ears of Death are perfectly acceptable as your one indulgence given the rest. Ah, what the hell - squeal! I'm geeking out. In fact, you've inspired me to give it a shot.

Polar bear's feet... well alright then, heh.
Anyway, thanks so much for the extremely high praise! I'm quite proud of this one, and I'm glad it could inspire you. I'll be watching for your own rendition!

This image is so cool. It all makes sense (well except the length of his ears lol).
I hope that in THE DARK KNIGHT Batman's new costume will look like this or something Lee Bermejo draws.
If it does it will be up there with the Spider-man movies!

Thanks so much! I can't wait for the Dark Knight! I've heard about the costume change, and I really hope they go with something more traditional. We'll just have to see.

That picture makes good sense. Really, if Batdude were real, that's sort of what he might look like. Not sure about the ears of death, though... how does he get into his car? What about doors? Or low-flying aircraft?
On the whole, though, I think it's pretty damn slick.

Thanks! That was the idea. But you're right about the Giant Ears of Death. I really should've made them much smaller, but I couldn't resist. Like I said, they're probably the least practical thing about him.

Too cool. The best part is that it's close enough to the current bat-design that DC would probably let it fly in print. They make such allowances for Lee Bermejo.

Thank you! And really? I'll have to check out his work. I tried to make this one a more practical design. not the sort of cargo pockets and all the extra pouches. In fact, I'm going to put up a new description for it momentarily, and that'll explain what I was trying to do with it.

I used pencil. mechanical pencil, actually. Then I scanned it and added the color to his face and belt, as well as a few other small details on Photoshop. And thank you very much!

Brilliant rendition... this has always been one of my favourites of yours.
We need to sit down with a scanner one day, and get some Hi-res, good-looking version of all of these. Seriously.
