Thank you! I'm afraid I don't have any real pointers outside of the ones I'm sure you've already heard - practice, and look at horses, either from life or photographs, and learn how to translate what you see into the medium you work in. I used a photo reference on this piece, and I have never successfully drawn a horse straight from memory. Take careful note of proportion relationships when you're drawing from a reference; a horse's face is easy to get out of alignment, and no amount of skilled coloring will repair something that has incorrect basic structure and form. Pay attention to detail - a lot of what makes horse portraiture pop above and beyond solid and correct form is the capture of light off coat, muscle under skin, and the finer details of wrinkles and creases and highlights.

You might try searching for a tutorial even here on DA; I know some artists are better at breaking down process than myself, and there are some really spectacular equine artists on DA.

Beautiful. I would work on the mane a little bit, but im not so great with the mane either so...
Love his/her eye too. It looks so real and full of life!

Marbletoast In reply to Arab-Fancy [2008-08-01 01:43:11 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

And the mane looked a bit eh to me as well. But it was a fast drawing, and so I didn't worry about it too much. Heh.

Arab-Fancy In reply to Marbletoast [2008-08-01 18:06:55 +0000 UTC]

haha, thats what I do most of the time. I do the mane last and im usually so excited that its finally done that I do a crapy job on the mane just so I can say its finished. ;]

Yea. My two hour drawing time was coming to an end.

Arab-Fancy In reply to Marbletoast [2008-08-02 17:02:24 +0000 UTC]

You have a spefic time limit? Thats odd. I can draw as long as I want..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Marbletoast In reply to Arab-Fancy [2008-08-06 01:37:42 +0000 UTC]

Ha ha, no, I don't have a limit on how much I am allowed or want to draw. On this particular piece, I didn't really have the time to do more, though, so it became a two-hour or so piece. It wasn't something I wanted to dwell on.

Arab-Fancy In reply to Marbletoast [2008-08-06 15:53:42 +0000 UTC]

OH, I see. I usually do my drawings really fast; not because I have to, simply because I dont have the patients to take much longer than I already do! ;]

I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!
i'd try it but i don't have a Bristol board...

i expect that it wouldn't look as good with out it.

i'm guessing that ithe Bristol board makes it look like hair. but i bet i'm wrong so could tell me wut it really is...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Marbletoast In reply to 1arabian [2008-06-30 04:34:44 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

Bristol is just a heavier weight paper; not much tooth or anything, and just white. So basically just thick white paper. Not a whole lot of texture or anything. It helps with drawings because it looks better, holds the medium better, and is acid free--but as for the textures of the coat and hair and things, that simply how it's drawn.

I hope that made sense? <_>

Arab-Fancy In reply to Marbletoast [2008-08-01 18:08:17 +0000 UTC]

Bristol you say? Never tried that? I've only heard of it like 3 times or so. Maybe I'll try that sometime. Thanks!

I find them to be simply beautiful! People who hate them have no reason to. Arabs are very intelligent and the stubborn ones are only that way because their owners did a bad job.

Marbletoast In reply to shakiraepa71 [2008-03-25 01:05:08 +0000 UTC]

Heh, yes, with Arabs you either seem to love 'em or hate 'em.

There is one arabian I know, though, who I think is just a bad apple. x_x I guess there's some in every breed.

shakiraepa71 In reply to Marbletoast [2008-03-25 01:15:25 +0000 UTC]

It's just that Arabs are extremly intelligent and and arabs personality also depends on the type of arab it is. The Egyptians and Polish arabs are very fiery and high strung. While the Gidrans on the other hand, are quite docile and make great 3Day Eventers.

This one was fat and hateful. Not that I blame him. I was a pretty bad rider then. I would have hated me, too...

ROFL!!!!!!!!! Fat arabs I pity. They never get a chance to show off their true beauty.

Aw, thank you! That gives me warm fuzzies. This one pleased me, which is rather rare actually. I felt this was stronger than other horse portraits I have done. Maybe I am getting better.
