For this, I’ll say that Eric is sent to a long trip overseas and he doesn’t want to leave Ariel alone, he has no choice.

This will fit perfectly for a pic-fic I'm making where Ariel (for various reasons) ends up being chosen as Atlantica's new Queen (Triton's alive but really wants to retire because reasons) but any ruler of the ocean must have 7 children for the 7 seas. She & Eric only have 4: Melody, Sirento who's a little boy-clone of Ariel & a pair of twins who don't look like either parent at first but grow into being red-haired hellions.
The only way to have 3 more kids before the coronation is to "spawn" as a mermaid (it's how her 6 sisters were born the same age, Triton "spawned" them but his barely pregnant Queen had Ariel in the more traditional manner). Basically Ariel has to cheat on Eric by releasing some of her eggs in the "Royal spawning garden" (mermaid body has fish-sex but they enjoy it just as much as mammals) & any merman strong enough to fight off the other contenders for a place in the garden releases his sperm over her egg patch (which can set off her sex response agin) & then it's just luck which combination happens. Ariel has to stay in the gardens with her eggs until she's sure she has at least 3 viable mer-zygotes (better to take extras because predators & environmental or genetic factors kill off most of the eggs). This image is Eric struggling to accept the necessity while Ariel tries to tell him that he's still the only one for her. Eventually Eric does for her what she did for him. He gets Triton to make him a mer-man & learns a whole new culture (not without some "dinglehopper" moments). As King-Consort, he raises "their" new children (redhead octo-girl. Blue haired mer-boy with a yellow tail & blue tiger-stripes & another blue/grey haired boy with shark fins & tail.) along with Sirento & the twins who all love not having to "put their legs on" anymore. Eric leaves control of his country to his well-trained daughter & Heir Melody. there are plenty of visits from daddy (& everyone else except Ariel. Melody has to come to her) to help her out with any problem. The country prospers, Being an ocean-side land, they are suddenly "blessed" with fewer storms and many more fish in their nets.

I can see it that Eric is remembering someone he lost and is sad, and Ariel is reminding him that as long as that person is in your heart they are never truly lost to you.
