This is amazing! Is this oil or acrylic? Is it on canvas? What a great, interesting work!

It is oil on Masonite panel. I like the smoothness, rigidity and weight of a panel better than canvas.
A lot of people like this painting, but I am not satisfied with it. In the real scene, the blue light was dimmer, greener and murkier than the result I got. It's a hazard of working from photographs, which are often inaccurate in night scenes.
I'm going to post a manipulated version of this painting to show what I really intended. Maybe I'll do the whole painting over again.
But thanks for your comments and I'm glad you like it. MH

I completely agree with you - I prefer panels any day because I can make my underlying drawings on them with charcoal and then change and move my sketch lines as needed. I understand why you're not 100% thrilled with your result, that you want the color in your painting to more exactly match the original scene but, still, this is a painting and not a photograph so we don't expect a perfect representation, especially since we haven't viewed the original scene - this work succeeds brilliantly as it is! If you want to take another shot and match the color better, then more power to you!

I swear when I first saw this I was reminded of an alien abduction video I saw. There was a man on duty and he was near that gate on the left. Hardly any light reached it. He slipped outside and went off visual suddenly there was a flash of light and he was gone. The security tape rolls for I think an hour or two before there is another flash and he appears inside the gate. He vomits and crawls out of view back toward the gate house. The video tape was sent in anonymous.

No problem...it amazes me how many different, and sometimes surprising, interpretations people give my work. But if it inspires you, feel free to use it. I just ask for due credit...MH

I'm not clear on what you'll be using it for...I'm an old fart and to me art is painting, drawing or sculpture...all this newfangled stuff is beyond me.
So tell me what I am giving permission for. Thanks, Mark

A storyboard for a scene, or for animation.
I wanted to find artist for designs like this and this is very well done.
It doesn't matter what art is, as long as the design has no limits of feature and has a purpose.
to use or to look at.

This reminds me of Edward Hoppers' work. It's beautiful.

Wow. I don't usually see art that I really just enjoy looking at, weird as it sounds, but I absolutely love this. Congrats

This is another one of those work where you go, if this is a photograph, then it's a blah. But if it's a painting, it's awesome! And this is def awesome! I'm glad this is on dA because I can't wait to go through your thumbnails >>

It looks great as is, but if you're going to do it again try changing the light source, it seems like there is just a bright light on the wall coming from nowhere, or maybe it's just that I can't see the lamp or whatever.

It's something about the lighting that makes it so captivating I think. It's just seems so familiar, as though we've all found ourselves looking at a vacant place like this at some point or another at some odd hour of the night.

I love urban areas at night. Even the "blandest" of buildings take on a whole new feel and personality.
Congrats on the DD - very well deserved. I honestly thought this was a photograph initially!

I have always loved your paintings, they show the calmness of nighttime and at the same time, the beauty of stillness, it almost has a Melancholic feel about it.

Amazing. It makes me feel like when I walk around my town at night, which I love to do. The cool calm of the night is somehow trapped in your art.

Congrats on the DD!
On the first glance I thought this was a photo, or a 3D render. But I was stunned discovering this was actually a well detailed painting. Please keep it up!

Ah, don't mention it.
But, I would like to mention myself, when my mom finally lets me get a job, I think I'll buy one of your prints because I think they're amazing.
Well, anyhoo, I hope you have a fantastic middle of the week!
