Description
The Lightning was developed by English Electric as a fighter and interceptor aircraft. It remains the only UK designed and built production fighter which is capable of Mach 2. Powered by two Rolls Royce Avon turbojet engines arranged in a unique vertical, staggered configuration the Lightning was known for its exceptional rate of climb, service ceiling and speed. These qualities resulted in the Lightning being a superb interceptor aircraft. After some initial teething problems the aircraft was beloved by most pilots who flew it. This artwork depicts the Lightning doing what it was designed to do - intercepting a Soviet bomber. Prints are available through my website: www.markkarvon.com.Related content

It's also about the only other type known to have intercepted an SR-71A. There was photographic evidence of this, shot by the Lightning pilot, and presented to the Habu crew at that year's Farnborough air show.

I got told by a friend who was there. I don't know which unit provided the Lightning, but I do know it was an F3 with the optional refueling probe, that shot pics of the Habu from above and behind. If you think that a painting of this would sell, you're welcome to use the story.

Known to intercept U2's at a supposed safe altitude of 66,000ft. The record for a Lightning is supposed to be about 88,000ft
