absolutely amazing shot! if you don't mind my asking: how many exposures did you take until this shot 'happened'? I remember taking lightning shots a year ago, and it took me about 400 exposures to get 10 that worked...

Thanks, I managed to get 10 in prior to it starting to rain heavy. 2 were keepers. That being said, I do a lot long exposure work, so I basically knew what I was doing. It is trail and error, but what I wanted was to capture many strikes. I exposed for the ambient which was a 5min 20 sec exposure, the let it go. If there were strikes the were extremely bright that I thought would over expose the image I'd stop. I was fairly happy with the result.

hm, exposing for the ambient light and then stopping when too bright strikes hit is a smart idea (should have come up with that myself ) thanks for the advice!

The foreground intrigues me. Where is this taken? I think it makes the storm that much more dramatic and ominous.

._. you can plan lightning?

When you watch the weather closely and follow it on radar understand its movements, yes you can. Just need to pick the right location for the direction the storm is travelling. Most storms here in Aus during summer will have associated lightning.
So that how its planned.

oh well i mean the multiple lightning strikes at once all able to be capture in the frame of the camera. but you are indeed a smart photographer

Misunderstanding.
That's simple, just a long exposure. I metered fro the scene at ISO 6400 which gave me an equivelent exposure of 5mins 20sec for ISO 100 @ F11. Then pressed the shutter. If I felt that the amount of light from any one strike was too great I stopped the exposure there and then.
Hope that explains it a bit better
