Description
The Carabinieri Class is a Starfleet support cruiser built to conduct and coordinate operations in remote regions of Federation space. Beyond the immediate reach of starbases and member worlds, vessels of this type are often the flagships of civilian development programs or Starfleet efforts to establish basic infrastructure both in space and planetside. As one of the more combat-capable classes in this role, Carabinieri vessels see service primarily in recently secured border regions, but occasionally also near the territories of isolationist governments deep within Federation Space.

General Information
To facilitate the wide range of large-scale operations required of the Carabinieri class, the design features large utility spaces and cargo holds for a variety of equipment. Three separate hangar bays allow for the rapid deployment of a small shuttle fleet and other utility vehicles, including construction modules, relays, and tractor emitters.

The Carabinieri Class is designed to function with a comparatively small crew of Starfleet personnel while accomodating a much larger number of civilian experts and mission-specific specialists. This makes it a popular vessel for certain scientific institutes and agencies within the Federation that often seek access to starships from Starfleet.

Mission Profile
When engaged in operations far from other Starfleet infrastructure, the Carabinieri Class acts as a command center, logistical hub, and communications platform for either its own support vessels and crew or for all extended assets assigned to the mission. These missions range from the establishment of new subspace emitters on a recently contacted world to preparations for the terraforming of a new planet. Both operations on a global scale such as the former or very small but specialized assignments such as the latter, require Starfleet's sophisticated equipment and the expertise of many experts to be prepared and brought underway.
Crews of the Carabinieri-Class, however, seldom get to see the fruits of their labor, as they'll be usually already on their way to the next assignment by the time work on the last one reaches its final stages. In this way, the Carabinieri is very much a pioneering vessel, preparing worlds and stations for further development and moving on once civilization has found its first foothold.

Its arrow-shaped primary hull and powerful warp-core allow the Carabinieri Class to achieve notable speeds, making it also suited to rapid-response assignments. In this capacity, some vessels of the class serve with the Starfleet Disaster Response Division under the Administration & Relations branch.

Class History
The Carabinieri Class began development during the 2350s as a command ship, but the original project was eventually shelved and the design remained dormant for almost ten years until a new initiative picked up the old plans and began converting them to a more support-oriented role. The development would still stretch for several years more as continuous problems with the automation and outsourcing of systems created one set-back after another. In almost eighteen years of its development, the prototype of the class earned a reputation as the "problem child" in its Research and Development division.
Nevertheless, the final variant was eventually brought underway and, despite its difficult start, quickly became a rather popular choice for starbases and frontier fleets on the edges of Federation Space.
