Description
The Nydenion is a heavy monitor starship operated by Starfleet to protect the border territories of the Federation. Deployed on the fringes of secure sectors, these vessels must face not only rival nations and conventional adversaries, but also the untold dangers of the unknown beyond the frontier. To meet these challenges, the Nydenion is built for exceptional endurance and equipped with a wide array of instruments and weapons.

General Information
Designed and built by the federal fleet yards of Andoria, the NX-23431 Nydenion was strongly influenced by the shipbuilding experience and military expertise of the Andorian Imperial Fleet. Designed as an answer to growing calls for the Federation to increase the protection of its territories in the wake of the Borg crisis and the Dominion War, the Nydenion united the best traits the Andorian shipwrights had to offer: Resilience, strength, and utility under every circumstance, all the while being a compact design fit for mass production.

Despite its role as a heavy defensive combattant in any scenario of an enemy incursion, the Nydenion is not as pure a warship as designs like the Defiant. Its role on the fringes of the Federation necessitates not only the ability to answer conventional threats but also the ability to recognize them and categorize unknown encounters.
To this end, the Nydenion carries advanced sensor systems and equipment for the analysis of newly encountered civilizations, species, and phenomena. Naturally, those capabilities in a single ship are superficial, but enough for accurate threat assessments.

Mission Profile
Nydenion Class vessels are typically deployed alone or attached to Starfleet Task Forces but are instead assigned directly to starbases and colonies of the Federation. From their home base, they make prolonged patrol runs, performing routine surveys and policing duties, while standing guard over federation territories.

Because they are deployed along the frontier without venturing far into the unknown, they are usually faced with more intrusive phenomena, ships, and threats coming from the wider galaxy into Federation space on their own volition. At times, these are still first-contact scenarios, but far more often encounters already reported by exploration vessels. However, since these are still typically very new, the ideal solutions to dealing with such newly discovered challenges are not often known, meaning the Nydenion faces strange encounters with little more than a few short warnings about what not to do.

Class History
Throughout the Federation's history, the Andorians maintained a strong imperial fleet and guard to secure their homeworld and territories, protecting their people from the myriad of known and unknown dangers in the galaxy. With this, they set a precedent for many Federation member worlds, who were unwilling to fully consign their security to Starfleet.

While this practice was always present in the Federation, it was on the verge of becoming a more dangerous political movement at the height of the Dominion War. Borg incursions and the advances made by the Dominion seemed to prove Starfleet's inability to effectively protect all worlds of the Federation. Especially many minor worlds felt overlooked as Starfleet concentrated its effort on "the most valuable" worlds while giving up entire sectors of less advanced civilizations to the enemy.

Growing concerns and opposition in the Federation council ultimately convinced Starfleet's leadership that a shift in doctrine was necessary and a new series of vessels would need to be built with the specific purpose of ensuring the safety of Federation worlds.
These would neither be the pure exploration vessels of the Federation's golden era, nor would they be pure warships, but instead highly capable monitor vessels fit to address the more frequent natural dangers and criminal threats of the known galaxy, while still powerful enough to engage in military actions.
