As far as I recall, Goofy was first dubbed "Dippy Dawg" in a REALLY old Disney short; he also looked a lot older and scruffier in that version. It was later that they took him from being a minor side character and redesigned him to be the familiar face we know and love.
My favorite version of Goofy has to be the 50s George G. Geef, when at times he wouldn't even have ears xP
Walt Disney wanted to integrate him to the civil life and parody it, using Goofy as his vehicle.
Many of the "How To" shorts come from this era
And, you see another version of his son, a redhead.
